If you are looking for a great college life then don’t come to IEM. Studies are the whole and sole mantra here. There are other activities and fest but you consider yourself lucky if you get chance to study here. You will not have to join a gym, if you are doing engineering from IEM. Our classes were on 9th floor and there is a lift for 10-12 people but there’s always a huge queue in morning and noon so at least thrice a day, you will have to go up and down. If I compare with a similar college Heritage Institute of Technology, they are a shade less than IEM but will give you a great college life. However, if you want to become something in life then IEM might help you. So, you can see there are pros and cons of IEM but college life I feel has to be better because only studies will not help develop us fully. The things that we do at college are something that we do only in college life.

Over 80% attendance is required at IEM. If any less than that then my friend you deal with a lot of processes as firstly your parents will be called upon. If bashing you in front of your parents was not enough just like school, you will be asked to do assignments 5 times as a form of punishment. I don’t know whether it helps but academically the college is too strict. Once you are done with the fourth semester, you will be given a 2 months internship which will be closely observed by the college management. After all this even before you graduate from here, you will have a fair chance to have placements from the campus.

Faculties were qualified but weren’t that helpful. I can even say a little biased as their favorite ones will get full help from them but those who ask much questions will be left on their own. The most intelligent one will be asked to help out others as it was a good idea but it was more to avoid questions. Luckily the most intelligent guy was one of the closest friends of mine and had good terms with the faculties so indirectly I benefitted. So, when it comes to faculty there are ifs and buts for me and I don’t mind if their favorites have some other ideas.

IEM placements were average but still the best in Kolkata when it comes to engineering colleges. Companies like Wipro, and Cognizant were the prime recruiters. The average salary offered was around 30-35k a month. Most jobs offered were in Bangalore so my parents anyways asked me to throw the offer letter in dustbin. Likewise, many students even after getting a decent enough job at the start as the pay scale of engineer’s grad is around 4-5 even from top colleges of Bangalore and Pune. So, placement wise I don’t see any complain but my parents were happy sending me for further studies than taking the job which I would have loved doing.

Since, the hostels were not means for students of Kolkata; I don’t qualify to answer this section. All I can say is that hostel facilities are provided by the institute but good or bad I leave it to the ones who have spent some time there.

I didn’t understand the infrastructure at all. We had to change the campus after a year and the campus where we completed three years had awful facilities. The lift that I have already written was one of the major issues. The permanent canteen was good but doing up and down time and again was not manageable. There was another refreshment section at the 6th floor but it kept changing the floors. For sports, a basketball court and a sports hall with carom, table tennis and a billiards table are all we had. The hall could have 20-30 students at a time and the strength was 20 times than that. I loved playing table tennis but could never play a single game. Those who are fond of outdoor sports unfortunately will have to play at roads as the campus has no space for them.

Campus life was pretty good for those who came to study and were only interested in studies. For students like us, if I leave out the fests, no much celebration happened at the campus. Luckily, I made few friends and since the college is in prime location walking around the college in evening were the best times. So, for me the campus life was average sort of thing.
