Indian Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Udit Singhal

PG students are considered juniors by 3rd and 4th year B. Tech students here. This was rare, but I enjoyed being questioned by B. Tech students, and they had all the right to call themselves seniors as they managed to get in here much before me. Friends here are referred to as wingies as almost all students will have their best friends staying in their wings. IIT Kanpur started my journey with a week-long orientation and induction program. It was awesome as it wasn't about introduction but playing games and doing team bonding. The management people took over the baton in the last couple of days and explained to us every minute details of the College. To make sure, we don't know people of our wing, wing competitions were introduced to know students of each wing. The orientation program ended with a one-off lecture to have a feel of the classrooms and then finished with a bang on a fresher's night party.

As the lectures started their continuity, we learned that participating in events and workshops is also a part of learning here. The first major academic event was the techno competition called 'Takneek'. I came fourth, but the students who topped were IITians already, so I didn't stand a chance against them. Before realizing the importance of studies here, our mid-sem dates were announced. So, all excitement and thrill went down the lane as I had to book myself for the library hall and forgot all that was happening beyond academics. In short, IIT is for geniuses who can manage both because only using IIT Kanpur for one aspect would rather make life dull here.

Faculties were special, or if I am allowed to say, they were elite. Few other IITs are the only place where you can find such quality of professors because their achievements were such that the principal had to say sorry to all the other professors who were not felicitated at the fest. One professor every year was felicitated for their achievement, and achievements were such that they took on the world and proved to everyone that India is where the best engineers are produced. Achievements didn't come if they didn't know how to teach the best way, so needless to say that their teaching pyro techniques were as good as Rafael Nadal's pyro techniques on Clay Court.

Placements were awesome, I mean, like, really awesome. All the students before the placements were masters of something, and based on the student's skills, they were free to interview whichever companies they felt could use their talents. All top national and international IT firms make their way here and shop for students by spending generously. IT and CSE department placements are the reasons why IITs maintain such high placement records. Average placements were around 12 lakhs, and the highest was close to 60 Lakhs. Students enjoy autonomy in placements as the TPP department is done well before the companies start coming to the campus.

PG students get single rooms here, and they are free to change them the way they want. So, hands down, IIT Kanpur hostels are the best in the country. Students were free to invite their friends in their rooms at any time. There was also no restriction of boys or girls going to each other's hostels. It was unimaginable for me, but at IIT Kanpur, everything is possible. The students of the same wing as I have already written are called wingies. Having fun with the wingies for as long as wanted. The hostel life at IIT Kanpur was such that I could never detach myself from the memories I have made there.

The IIT Kanpur campus should be declared as an academic city as it is that vast. Over 1000 acres of land in which over 10k people live, including students, faculty, and other staff. From Pizza's to homemade cooked meals, you will get almost everything inside the campus. I wish I could explain all the facilities available here, but since there were plenty, it's impossible to mention all those in this review. There is enough greenery and along with humans some animals and birds too have made IIT Kanpur as their home. There are sign boards that don't harm any animals, and because of that, we used to spot a lot of Peacocks inside the campus. It wasn't Peacock, actually; It was a Peacock family that could be spotted.

Even if you don't study here, try to make friends with some IIT Kanpur students as friends and families of students are allowed inside the campus. The campus ride gave us some amazing experiences and it can be for all those who visit this mini-city. The biggest learning at the campus was that one can't cheat and succeed as there are no shortcuts to pass the exams here. So, to enjoy, make sure you devote equal time to studies as well.
