Faculty of Management Studies MBA Review By Rajesh Suri

'FMS' is not known for placements because the program that they have started is there to create our ventures and provide jobs. My review is based on FMS, which is after talking to various students of XLRI, IIMK, IIMB, and MDI. Those Institutes teach on how to get a job while FMS is different as coming from a business family job was never my top agenda. My father was pretty clear that I will have to join his business after my studies and engineering background wouldn't have helped me to understand business management. I was eligible for XLRI, SIBM, and other top Institutes, but FMS being in my city, it was more viable for me to choose FMS over the others. FMS fees was the lowest of them all, as during our time the fees was 20k a year.

MBA in entrepreneurship was provided only by FMS and is the best course for students having their businesses. The two-year course had six semesters with five subjects in each semester and covered almost all the sectors to know what each sector has in common. The common is MBA (Maal Bechna Aata Hai) as if you can't do that, there's no point in doing an MBA. We studied finance, marketing, HR and every single aspect of the studies that others did specialization in. Thus, the entrepreneurship program of the FMS didn't have an edge over the others, but also is the flagship program of FMS. I don't know now because the last time I went to FMS was in 2013 and I saw students enjoying and doing the things which were unimaginable during our time. Our classes, assignments were non-stop as our internship programs were switched and were sent to places for that. In our program the internship was for six months and coming from a textile background, I was sent to Surat's 'Meenakshi Textile Hub' for six months of internship.

I would use some words for them. They were intimidating as they will ensure that you are always trailing in studies because they gave us so much material to study and do projects on that there was no way we could have done that on time. Depressing because their methods can depress anyone as they would never sugar-coat things before throwing words on us. Humbling, for sure as no matter what and which award they have in their CVs, they never let any of those come between us. Lastly, enlightening because they made us understand the harsh realities of life that we will be entering after the course.

Placements are 100% but entrepreneurship program students were not eligible for placements from the campus. Our internship partners were the only hope if we had to get campus placement, but since I never wanted it, I was happy doing the course. All the students of our program didn't chase placements, but the other department's students intimidated us with the kind of packages they got. Packages worth 12-14 lakhs back then might not sound good enough today, but in those days, FMS became a heartthrob for students who wanted to pursue MBA because of such packages.

There is no hostel facility of FMS as an individual, but DU has made arrangements at the University hostels for the students of FMS. 80% of the crowd were outsiders and the hostel became a necessity for those who couldn't afford private accommodation. Just like the College fees, the DU hostel fees too were peanuts, but the quality of the University hostel is in a very poor state.

FMS is a College and there are no large spaces or hangout spots like in IIT Mumbai or Delhi. The College building, which has gone old, was in much worse condition than it is now. The ceiling paint was going off and the fans were so above the head height that students used to sweat in classes. Luckily, Delhi has a good amount of winters, otherwise, that could have been a mess. Thankfully the campus was renovated 7-8 years back when I last went there and apart from the tea stall which was there then, there is a great canteen at the campus now. For sports lovers or the ones that need a special place to chill with friends, the DU University campus was the only option as FMS individually has nothing exceptional to share about.

If FMS gauging parameters are placements, then FMS is the best B-School after IIMs. However, many might have mistaken that FMS students just study and study is also wrong. Students from FMS are sent to all the competitions organized at DU. FMS students haven't killed at the quizzes or debates, but in dance and sports too. Everything about FMS campus life is related to the world of business, so even the students who did engineering and came here went all blank about their previous life and all that they had in their minds was business.
