Inside Look at IIT Bombay: From Admission to Graduation

Overall it was a fortune to get into Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai and get the once in a lifetime experience of studies and fun. Work hard to get into IIT Bombay. IIT Bombay is ranked 1st in India by QS World University Rankings and 148th in world. Studying in IIT itself is an immense thing which fetches you respect among friends and family. You will get to study and learn from the brightest minds in India. To get into this institute was my dream from 8th class.

I am pursuing my B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering (CSE). This is considered as the top most batches in India. I chose this because it was my dream since 8th standard. I am into Coding, DSA (Data Structures And Algorithms). Eligibility Criteria to get into this institute is firstly we need to score at least 75% in 12th grade MPC subjects (Math, Physics and Chemistry). For students with SC/ST reservation the cutoff is 70% for the same subjects. You need to clear JEE mains Examination to get qualified for JEE Advanced Examination. These exams are based on Math, Physics, and Chemistry. Their pattern changes every year. They are considered as very tough exams. For Admission it is through JOSAA counseling, you need to choose your preferred branch and institute based on you All India Rank in JEE Advanced and your Category like General, OBC, SC/ST, etc. There is also reservation for Girls. For exams in courses there will be quizzes first which are conducted 3-4 weeks after semester begins. There will be mid-semester exams roughly halfway through the semester. There will Quizzes again. Then there will be End Semester Exams at the end of semester. There can also be assignments, course projects, attendance criteria, safe quizzes that are based on the course and instructor. This structure helps us to be engaged in the subject and able to solve real life problems in internships and jobs.

For admission process there is a seat acceptance fees which should be paid to JOSAA counseling. As far as I remember very small amount will be deducted as processing fee and the other amount will be transferred to our institute and can be used as fees if I remember correctly. For general category the seat acceptance fees is around Rs. 35,000. For all other categories it will be Rs. 15000. Per semester the fees will be around Rs. 1,40,000 out of which Tuition fee is around Rs. 1,00,000, medical fee around Rs. 2000, examination and registration fees around Rs. 2200, student benevolent fund around Rs. 700, student accident insurance fund around Rs. 300, semester mess advance is around Rs. 22,500, and hostel fees is around Rs. 13,000. Rs. 22,500 semester mess advance should be paid at the beginning, but per day the mess cost will be Rs. 150 so if you eat out of mess for some days then that money gets refunded back later. There will be several scholarships based on merit and financial background of the students.

The faculty members at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai are very knowledgeable and qualified. The students can also do research projects under them. If the student is aiming to get admission in big institutions for higher studies, their Letter of Recommendation plays a significant role. Some instructors use slides to teach and some use board. For some of the courses the recorded lectures are available in YouTube or will be shared at the start of course. We can approach them through mail, go to their office, message them in Microsoft teams, or a platform called, Google classroom. This mode of communication depends on the course and instructor.

The placement cell is good. It helps students very well by conducting resume making sessions, they verify resumes, they conduct practice tests in coding, aptitude, etc. They provide resources for preparation for various companies. Many renowned companies like Goggle, Microsoft, Da Vinci Derivatives, NK Securities, Graviton, Oracle, etc. come for placements. The top recruiting sector in out institute is Engineering and technology, the average annual package CTC (Cost to Company) is 23.5 Lakh Per Annum. The median salary was 17.92 lakh per annum, last year there were 22 students got more than 1 crore package.

Yes there are around 18 hostels. Girls and boys have separate hostels. In B.Tech students of 1st, 2nd, 3rd year get double sharing rooms. While fourth year students get single rooms. The facilities are great here. Every hostel has its own mess. Every floor will have washing machines, dryers, etc. The place will be kept hygienic by cleaning regularly. Every hostel has its own fest and gala dinner. Every hostel has its store or vending machine. Some hostels also have dhobi facility. Every hostel has its own gym. Boys are allowed to go inside girl’s hostel with permission till 10pm at night. Girls are also allowed to boy’s hostel with permission.

The campus is situated in Powai, The campus size is about 545 acres. There is a building for every department, there will be infinity corridor connecting most of them, there is a central library with great facilities. There are many cafeterias inside campus like almost every building has a cafeteria and there are also eateries like dominos, cafe coffee day, and chaayos inside the campus. There is a lot of greenery. There is Gymkhana with big ground and outdoor courts and also indoor courts. There is a hospital inside. There is swimming pool and also courts for many games like basketball, hockey, badminton, and squash. There are 3 guesthouses inside campus where we can book stay for visitors. We can also book room in hostel if someone is visiting.

The overall campus life is awesome. There are many clubs almost everything has a club named after it. Like there is Insync which is a Dance Club, Symphony Singing Club, Roots Folk Arts Club, Yogastha Yoga Club, Pixels the Photography Club, Literati Literary Arts Club, We Speak Speaking Arts Club, Design Club, Silver Screen Film Club, Fourth Wall Dramatics Club, Vaani Indian Languages Club, Styleup Fashion Club, and Comedy Cons Humor Club. These are some of the cultural clubs that are present at Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai. There are also several technical clubs like Aeromodelling Club, BioX Club, Electronics and Robotics Club, Energy Club, Math and Physics Club, Web and Coding Club, Krittika The Astronomy Club, Astronomy Club, Cyber Security Club, etc. There is entrepreneurship cell. There are events or fests happening everyday at some corner in the campus. The 2 major are the TechFest and Mood Indigo known as the Asia’s largest technical fest and Asia’s largest cultural fest.
