Affordable Law Education at SLS CUSAT Kochi Fee Structure

SLS CUSAT is a fine institution of Law situated at Kalamasseri. It has a vibrant nature surrounding with ancient trees and a public road that runs through the college. It is basically a university, so you get to meet many people around you, including Engineers and PhD Holders from various departments. This is essential for a law student because it helps to improve the connections that one gets which can be very useful once he graduates. This is the biggest advantage of this university over National Law schools it that it has such a large campus and not confined to the field of Law. There are good food spots and affordable housings options around the campus. Its campus has two restaurants and multiple food booths, which are affordable. There are various restaurants outside the campus as well. However, what made me choose its financial aspect. The fee is pretty affordable when you compare it with other colleges. That was the only reason for me to choose this university.

My primary motivation was to become an advocate. You need to write the CUSAT CAT entrance exam. Seats are limited as there are only 33 seats in BBA LLB and around the same for B.Com LLB as well. 50% of the seats are reserved for SC/ST/ETB/EWS/OBC communities. There are reservations for people with disabilities as well. Exams are conducted on time. There are 10 semesters. In each year, there will be two semesters. The portions are completed on time. Attendance claims will be given to students who are missed classes as they were participating in extracurricular and co curricular activities. This is essentially, why it is much better than all the Government Law colleges in Kerala.

Total course fee is around Rs. 2,68,200, in which admission fee is Rs. 6,040; annual tuition fee is Rs. 53,640 and semester tuition fee Rs. 26,820. Special discounts and financial aid are also provided by the university, as there is a fee concession for SC/ST/OBC students. In case of scholarships, E-Grantz Scheme is available for eligible reserved category students (full/partial reimbursement) along with other several National Scholarships.

All the faculties are highly qualified and have PhD, NET, or LLM. The staff is highly knowledgeable and helpful in other matters as well such as moot court competitions and research papers. The method of teaching is using PPTs and white boards. Some teachers also provide study materials. It depends on the faculty. The problem solving abilities of the teachers are satisfactory too. The faculties are on a permanent or contract basis. However, there are a few guest faculties as well. Sometimes researches scholars are appointed by the faculties when they do are unable to attend the class. The faculties also organize seminars and paper presentation programs for the students. The teacher to student ratio is also not a huge problem. Classes are functioning accordingly to the academic schedule. According to my experience, the faculties are pretty chill and encouraging. They are sincere and always willing to help.

Placement is probably the biggest drawback of this college. There is an over emphasis on litigation. The placement cell is coordinated by the students with the supervision of the teachers as well. However, the amount to good packages is very less. The best packages are around 6 to 7 LPA. However, most of the packages are kind of average and has around Rs. 22,000 to 28,000 per month packages from companies like Muthoot Finance. I am a third year student and am yet to be placed.

Yes, the college holds 7 hostels for boys and 7 hostels for girls at a very affordable rate. Each hostel has around 80 ton 100 rooms and houses around 250 inmates in each of them. There is one hostel exclusive for PG students and one exclusive for first year students. Girl and boy’s hostel are separate. The mess is completely run by the students, therefore it is hygienic, and the menus are also top notch. Actually, there are not a lot of rigid hostel rules, which are required to be followed. There is also no hostel curfew. Hostel life has been one of the most memorable moment of my college life. Though, there is every possibility to get complacent about the hostel life so be careful. There is also an excellent study hall inside the hostel. At the end of the day, I’d definitely recommend you to be a hosteler.

Actually, there aren't a lot of rigid hostel rules which are required to be followed. There is also no hostel curfew. Hostel life has been one of the most memorable moment of my college life. Though, there is every possibility to get complacent about the hostel life so be careful. There is also an excellent study hall inside the hostel. At the end of the day, id definitely recommend you to be a hosteler.

The campus has an administrative block, a seminar complex, a student’s amenity centre that holds a GYM, badminton court, the student’s union office, a ground, a library, a sports arena, 2 restaurants, and multiple food stalls. There are also many engineering departments inside the college, which includes a department for Polymer Science, Photonics, Instrumentation, Ship Technology, Marine Engineering, Department of Statistics, and many other departments. My favorite thing about this campus is that it is very lush and close to nature. There is a nature walk inside the campus filled with trees and birds. A lot of cows, cats, and dogs roam around the campus too.

Overall campus life is satisfactory. CUSAT may have many things. The clubs like research club and moot court committee are functioning very well. Extracurricular activities like Sargam for Arts, Kurukshetra for Sports, Astra for Sports, etc. occur every year. Hostel fests like Saspow, Sarothsav, Siberia, etc. also happen every year. Moreover, programs of students Union, and other political outfits can be seen regularly. Overall, my experience has been very satisfying.
