BA Economics Honors at SPMCW, Delhi University

Shyama Prasad Mukherji College for Women is an off-campus college of Delhi University. The college is big, area wise, in comparison to various other colleges of DU. Being only a girls college the campus life is not very exciting but if you make good friends the college will be more exciting. I chose this college first because I wanted to study economics honours secondly the colleges of DU is cheaper than private colleges, also being a college under DU gives it a different value in addition to the course opted by me. You can choose this college if your main focus is study and if you want to pursue masters because the placement package is not very good. I myself chose this college because it provides me time for other future courses I want to opt or pursue.

I chose BA Economics Honours to study. I like the subject on a personal level, beside the course itself is reputed. DU is also famous for its economics honours degree adding it to my choice. The admission procedure is that you have to give CUET exam and score above the cutoff. Then after scoring and getting selected for the college you have to verify your documents with the college after which you finally get the admission. The internal assessment goes on continuously. You are even marked for your attendance. Projects and practical’s are given to see your understanding and finally the end semester exams. The course allows us to navigate real life economic situation. See and understand what caused it how it can be balanced. You understand in depth the connection between reality and the subjects being taught.

The course is cheap as a central government University. The charges for a year is Rs.9,214/-. It covers all tuition fees amount, admission and registration fees. You also get some concession based on the category you belong. The provision of scholarship is available you just have to submit asked documents.

The faculty is good. They work really hard for us. They will be available for help any time. They share every study material. But some professors are not very good. However they will always be ready to assist and they also provide knowledge about programs students can be part of. Mostly teachers use blackboard to teach. The faculty is vast. However I have no idea of the ratio between students and teachers. The professors are approachable. They will listen to your problem and solve them.

The placement cell lacks proper means and methods. The companies that comes for placement offers very less package. Companies like Genpact, Amazon and Wipro are regular employers. Average package is Rs.3.00 to Rs.5.00 lakhs per annum.

College does not have a hostel. If you have to study you have to take overpriced PGs or rent an apartment.

The campus is big with different blocks. The college is not in very crowded area. It is near the metro station of Shivaji park. The central market is also nearby. The class room and ground is big and spacious. Library is a 3 storey building with Books of all courses. Seminar hall is not so good but the auditorium is big. Canteen is comparatively small but it has good variety of eatables and the price is also concessional.

The campus life is average. You won't get to see much of the crowd here. Being a girl’s college is an issue here. Also not many events are organised here. There are numerous clubs. Navrang a drama club is very active here. Annual fest is organised in the college named the Srijan fest. Mostly activities of engagement happen around festivals like Diwali fest. The experience of mine in this college is not very exciting.
