Banaras Hindu University B.Com Review By Abhay Gujjar

BHU as a unit has done well for its students because education that has become so costly today, BHU still maintains a fee that is in affordable range of everyone. Things kicked off right from the word go and no panicking was done at BHU Banaras. The education here is good and faculties outstanding, so overall all the units that I will be reviewing has contributed in some or the other ways. So, just the simple fact of life that UG programs are meant for some fun and not study alone. BHU has provided us just the same. Our course too was such that we didn’t have to study day in and day out. Forget everything else, how many universities ensure that they should have a world class hospital at their campus and students can get all their tests and injuries treated at free of costs. Well, BHU does that as even for a minor thing we could go to the university hospital and get ourselves treated in the best way.

With whom is BHU competing? Well, BHU is completing with the champions university of the world as professors from all around the globe have come here and given lectures. They have sung praises to the moon from the university as university has produced the best set of students ever in India. If anyone doubts, they can look at the record books and then we will have a healthy debate on this. From data scientists to world renowned mathematicians and researchers are what BHU has produced over the years. Even now or during my batch there were few exceptional students who had their eyes set on becoming a renowned educationist and I hope they become one soon. So, academics here was not about one person or the management alone, the unit that runs the academics here have organized things in a manner that those who want to have fun can have fun and those who want to become a researcher can become a researcher.

Outstanding is what the faculties were and their contribution to the university has been immense. Talking particularly about our batch and time, there were 20 faculties for B. Com (Hons) and all of them were scholars. When you look at B. Com you will be like why you need scholars to learn mere economics and accountancy. Well, the university thinks otherwise and that is why they have maintained the top position for so long. When the world looks at the students and faculties of BHU, they are like did we hear you correctly the first time? Are you from BHU? This is what the respect that faculties and students of BHU have earned over the years.

For B. Com placements were obviously not that great as we hardly could speak in English then, I mean struggle even today but we were offered BPO jobs in some call centres in Gurgaon and Noida. Though, we were offered handsome salaries but I have my reservations against such jobs and because one thing BHU taught is that studies should never stop, so most of us went for higher studies rather than taking BPO jobs.

I just checked that there were 60 odd hostels at the campus. I haven’t counted them but all I know is they were plenty. Nearly 15k students stay at the hostels so, 60 hostels might be there. BHU hostels are good as obviously they aren’t as luxurious as many private universities have these days but they charged pennies for the stay and even for 40, one used to get one time meal at 40 at the hostel mess. I don’t think it could get any better than this, so hostels were good and rather the best options for outsiders.

Varanasi is known for Kashi Vishwanath Temple and a replica of that named New Vishwanath Temple was there at BHU campus. There were few more temples other than that. There were many other landmarks like the Teresa Garden, Mango Garden, Godavari Gardens and many departmental gardens like the Botany Garden, Chemistry Garden and so on. I mean I can’t describe every single facility as there was hardly anything that wasn’t there at the university. You talk about canteens and the food, you can have Mughlai, Chinese, Pizza, or whatever at canteens of BHU. You talk about sports and you had both indoor and outdoor world class sporting facilities.

Campus life is the assessment of entire things that we experienced at the university. In terms of facilities, we never felt short of anything. In terms of extra-curricular activities, they were so many that we never had felt like we didn’t have the opportunity to have fun at the campus. So, BHU campus life offered us many great things or should I say showed us almost all the finer things in life.
