Sports / EWS quota students are benefitted at BHU Varanasi

BHU Varanasi is a very reputed University with good ranking and has a very good environment. There are a lot of facilities available for students such as free bus services, free health check up and even free medicines for students at health centres by using their health card. Most of the things in campus are affordable. Most of the functions or events are open to students from various departments. There are also many student led societies.

My course is B.Com (Hons.) and I believe this course can help build a strong foundation for Commerce students. The motive for choosing it was to be able to complete my graduation from a reputed University. For getting admission in my course at this University, you need to appear for CUET exam and choose the required subjects, which are, Accountancy, Business Studies and General Test. The combination of all these subjects makes a total of 650 marks. The cut-off generally depends on the toughness of the exam and the performance of other students in a shift. When I appeared for the exam, the first round cutoffs were 505-510. And as far as I remember, this year the cut-off marks were around 548. These cut-off marks decrease with each round of counselling. Students having sports or EWS quota are benefited. The admission process was always tedious but it was still okay. The frequency of exams is not as often. Mid-terms are generally taken as per the will of the subject teachers.

The main benefit of studying at this University in my opinion is its low fees. I am a general category student and my first year fee was Rs. 2300/-. Later, I had to pay only Rs. 1150/-. This was all for the fee I had to pay. There were no extra charges. But, if a student takes admission through a paid seat, they have to pay a higher amount, since their admission took place at a comparatively lower score. Their fee was around Rs. 16,000/- for the first year. This fee structure does not include the hostel fee. There are many Government scholarships available for which student can apply. The NSP scholarship amount was around Rs. 12,000/- which was received by numerous students.

Faculty members are good. The professors are well-qualified but I believe that the student teacher ratio is can become more balanced. Due to the lack of professors, students are mostly taught by scholars. The mode of teaching is blackboard or group discussions. Classes can get irregular at times. The professors are averagely approachable and friendly. Their doubt solving skills are great too. Students can reach out to them to their cabins to take doubts.

I don't have much knowledge about the University placements as I myself am in second year. But, as from what I know, there is a placement cell and some companies do visit the University for placements. The main reason behind fewer placements is that students want to continue further studies or prepare for Government exams. Average package of students ranges from 3 LPA to 4 LPA, while the highest can range from 8 LPA to 10 LPA.

Yes, the University offers hostel facilities for both girls and boys separately. Number of rooms are adequate but still could be less as the number of out-station students are quite high. The hostel has a good environment and is not very strict. The hostel timing for girls was 8 PM. It now might have changed to 10 PM (not sure). The mess food is hygienic and good. You get meals 4 times a day including breakfast, lunch, evening tea & snacks and dinner.

Campus is very beautiful and large. There are trees on both the sides of road throughout the campus. The buildings of BHU Varanasi are old but the facilities are still in good condition. The facilities offered to arts and commerce students can be improved though. There is a huge and spacious central library where a large number of books are available. Moreover, there are departmental libraries too. There are canteens too inside the campus. The security of the students is well-maintained and there are guards at every corner since outsiders can enter the University. Students are also provided with health facilities which are very good.

Overall campus life is good and you can enjoy. The University crowd is huge but it doesn’t affect a lot due to the enormous size of the campus. There are a lot of clubs and societies for varied interest of students. There are a lot of extracurricular activities organized by different department. Many fests and events are conducted throughout the year.
