Campus Life of UPES Dehradun: Clubs, Culture, and Community

My overall experience at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies is really good till now. the serene vibes and the cool and calm atmosphere of the area is just wonderful. The students are really ambitious and are really hard working. The people here are really good. Factors because of which I chose this particular university is because of placements and also because of the NAAC A+ grade in academics. The fields and subjects I have here are the best. They build a strong foundation as well as a really well stream and course planned syllabus. What is different in this university, is actually the atmosphere, peace and calm loving nature of the university that makes it a place we all love.

I chose the course B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering which is one of the top growing fields of the university for the past five or six years. I would suggest you to take the same because of the IIT graduate faculties as well as the growing outbreaks in the field of Artificial Intelligence. The entry requirements are not too high its 50% in boards and for scholarship you should be having at least 85% in boards. You can also enter through JEE, SAT and even UPES's own entrance exam called UPESEAT. Admission process is really smooth you can go on the website and register yourself and even get a campus tour or you can just visit the campus and check for yourself at the admission corner. Frequency of terminal exams is like twice every semester with mid semester examinations and end semester examinations almost every 2.5 to 3 months. There are several internal assessments and even projects and assignments which you have to complete in a proper way.

The fee at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies is kind of high. Without Scholarships: - Rs. 5,00,000 per year and Rs. 2,50,000 per semester (inclusive of all management and lab and card fees which is approximately Rs. 20,000). Rs. 1,50,000 per year for hostel fee admission and registration fees are not much, it could be Rs. 1,000 - Rs. 2,000 only. Scholarships are awarded if you have great marks which could provide you 20% scholarship on your tuition fee. There are also domicile discounts for the people living in Uttarakhand of about 20% as well to maintain the scholarship you must score above 7 CPGA in each semester itself. There are no such specific discounts for specific category students. There is no financial aid only scholarships are provided of up to 30% based on merit.

The Faculty teaching at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies are like really qualified. They are all IITians and NITians with great knowledge to what they teach. They are really good in whatever they do. They have liked a really educated background like all of their parents and even siblings belong to IIT's and NIT's. The method of teaching has blackboards, PPT's and even doubt clearing and group discussion sessions for the class. The teaching method is really dynamic and all the students enjoy the classes. Our teachers have masters in problem solving be it any doubt of any book or any question you can look on the web they have solutions to everything and could help you through thick n thin of the subject. The teacher student ratio is like 30:1 like almost for every 30-40 students there is a teacher for a specific subject. Our teachers at UPES are really approachable and are very polite (except for a few). They are experts and really down to earth people who actually help their students excel and grow.

All the placements and everything are well managed at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies. Some renowned companies that visit the university are Microsoft, HCL and many more. Packages offered are: - Highest - 27 LPA in my respective field, Lowest - 5 Lakh Per Annum and the average is 18 lakh for the top 10% students. Then total average is 8-9 LPA. I am not yet placed. there are also internships and we also have our own startup incubator at University of Petroleum and Energy Studies called RUNWAY which helps us grow as well.

I am not residing in the campus hostel I’m currently residing in a private hostel. The university does offer hostel on first come first serve bases. There is variety of rooms all triple sharing. The mess is average. There is common washroom for every floor in the campus hostel. The girls and the boys block in the university hostel are separate with guards all around to prevent unknown trespassing. The timings are 8pm for the campus hostel. The fees are almost Rs. 2,27,000 for the campus hostel. The meals are provided for approx. 4 times given breakfast, lunch, snacks, and dinner. My personal experience is moderate. The campus is smoke and alcohol free if anyone caught they are expelled.

University of Petroleum and Energy Studies has really great infrastructure. It has playgrounds, libraries, food courts, cafes, and everything you could think of. Campus is approximately of 45 acres. There are seminar halls, auditoriums and we have a really good ground where all the fests take place. There is a triple story canteen which has dominoes, dunkin donuts and really good franchisees. There is a triple story library as well as cricket nets and cricket pitch, 3 basketball courts, volleyball courts, a full sized soccer field, and medical transport is also available. There are AV aids in the classrooms; there are mics and HDMI connectors to present everything. There are 3 inside cafes which provide snacks and coffee my personal favorite is the football field since I’m a football player. The facilities complements our course as our teachers also are very playful and do fun activities with us all the time.

My overall campus experience is really good. The university crowd is amazing. There are all kinds of people here and everyone is enjoying their own peace. The people are really helpful. There are a lot of clubs and students chapters and I’m a part of 2-3 of them. There is OPEN community which works on open source projects and there is ACM which takes care of the different activities and functions of the university. University of Petroleum and Energy Studies have various extracurricular activities like Spandan, hackathons and many more. Spandan is basically where teachers and students play together. It is a 3-4 day event. Fests and events are one of the main attractions of the university so there are 3-4 fests including the fresher’s party. The fests are namely Uurja, Roohaniyat and many more. The events also have DJ Night which we all enjoy and recently a movie was also directed in here. My experience of the campus life is really good.
