BITSAT: Entry Requirements and Counseling at BITS Hyderabad

BITS Hyderabad present in the outskirts of Hyderabad is the best institute you can get in Hyderabad (after IIT & IIIT of course). I have felt that the culture here is amazing. It is probably the only engineering degree where innovation is pushed by means of student led startups, making the overall experience better. Academics wise the grading here is easier than other branches of this institute. Although cutoffs for Goa and Hyderabad campus are same, I chose Hyderabad campus due to the opportunities I can get in the city.

I didn't choose EEE, but I got it. It was the best branch I could get for my score in BITSAT. This branch is pretty good as there are a lot of core opportunities for Electronics students and almost all the companies are open for us. The entry requirements were basically more than 60% marks in Physics, Chemistry, and Math alongside having 75% in the 5 subjects in class 12th. There is BITSAT counseling in which exam score & cutoffs are decided for each branch. You have to pay an initial amount to hold your seat in the counseling process. After all the rounds, you come to campus and get the admission letter, pay the hostel fees and that's it. There are 2 exams per year and one can attempt these exams only 4 times, 2 times a year just after your 12th or a year after that. The course is designed according to the industry requirements. There are exit tests in lectures that are surprise exit tests which holds 10% of the marks the only thing we all hate

Per semester fee of my course is around Rs. 3,15,000. It varies in every semester but there is not too much increase in fee each semester. You have a means of payment in institute outlet called SWDPay in which you pay from the app, and it gets added to your next semester fee. There is also options for scholarships, two types of scholarships first McN and second is Merit Based. McN stands for Merit cum need scholarship in which if your household income is below a certain limit (15 Lakh for this year) you are eligible for that. For 100% McN this year you had to score at least 8.3 CGPA and all the scholarships are provided on CGPA and not your grade in the particular semester (SGPA). The merit scholarship cutoffs are very high (9.5+ CGPA).

Faculty members are highly qualified. Almost all of them are PhDs from reputed institutes. Some have done their studies from foreign reputed universities like Cornell and MIT. We are taught at 3 different levels, Lectures: taught by professors on digital board to 300-700 students for 50 mins. Tutorials for 60 to 70 students taught by professor/PhD students under them. Labs are same as tutorials but just the difference is it is like your labs in schools. There are many faculties, and you can email literally anyone and they will reply and help if you have a genuine request. They are really approachable, and I personally have reached out to many of them for different cases

There is a dedicated placement unit in our institute, which works for the whole week. The unit is really competent and gets top companies to hire on our campus and provide help in interviews and screening tests as well. There are different days for placements and almost everyone with a decent CGPA (7.5+) gets placed. Google, Microsoft, Texas Instruments, Rubrics, PayPal, and many such big names come for tech, non-tech, and core opportunities. The average package of all the branches this year considering the downfall in the market is 13 to 14 LPA but normally its 20+.

BITS Hyderabad requires you to stay on campus. There is no day scholar mode available. The first- and second year hostels are newly built and have good facilities. The third year hostels on the other hand are single occupancy with average facilities. There are 350 rooms in one of the first-year hostel. There are a total of 2 complete hostels for first year students. For second year, you have an option to choose single occupancy hostel with double occupancy hostel. Girls’ and boys’ hostels are different, but mess is same. There are 2 messes, and the food is fairly okay. There are no timings for hostels you can come anytime but if you have gone out of campus on a day pass, you have to come before 10:30 PM. On an outstation, you can come after 6 AM on the day of arrival.

There are 2 academic blocks close to each other. One is recently built, and the other one is new. The campus s really big 120 acres approximately and is in the outskirts of Hyderabad. There are three types of classrooms 700, 300, and 70 capacities as mentioned above in academics. Library, auditorium, and seminar halls are also present. There is a canteen where you can grab a quick snack in academic block. There is a medical center too with well-equipped team of doctors. The institute is gated and guarded by guards. The best place is the chess courtyard in new academic block.

The campus life is really good as all of us stay in campus. The campus is so lively around fests, everyone works together, bond over various activities. There are many clubs, and the crowd is great actually, there are always some exceptions, but the crowd is really hardworking. There are 3 fests: Pearl (cultural), Arena (sports), and Atmos (technical). There are various workshops and guest lectures offered by the institute administration almost every week.
