NIT Sikkim's Academic and Fee Structure

The overall experience at NIT Sikkim is nice. The scenery of the campus is good as Mt. Kanchenjunga is visible from the campus. The environment of the institute is excellent as professor and seniors are very helping in nature, not only in terms of academic but also in terms of non-academic issues or worries. One thing that is very nice about the professors are very supportive so make most of it, if you got admission at the institute.

I have completed my B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering at NIT Sikkim. You can choose this department if you love Physics. Eligibility criteria to get admission into the institute are qualifying the JEE Main examination with good percentile and class 12th with minimum of 75% marks. After this, you have to appear for the JOSAA counseling, where you will be allotted a seat at the institute. The institute has semester system with 1 end semester exam of 50 marks & 2 mid semester exams of 15 marks each and rest 20 marks are in the hand of the respective faculty i.e. internal marking.

Tuition fee is about Rs. 60,000 to Rs. 75,000 per semester. There is discount in the fee based on the family income of the student. For example, students with family income of less than 1 LPA, whole tuition fee is waived off. Students with family income between 1 to5 LPA, two third tuition fee is waived off. At NIT Sikkim, the hostel fee is about Rs. 8,500 per semester and mess fee is almost Rs. 24,000 per semester. You will be entitled to get so many scholarships from different ministry of Government of India and in some case from Government of Sikkim for local students.

Some of the faculty is highly qualified but most of them are new. All the professors are supportive and caring in nature. Their teaching style is good. The institute can bring more experienced faculty members. Almost all professors are PhD degree holders from many reputed institutions like IITs, NITs, and abroad.

There is Training and Placement Cell in the institute. It is run by students of NIT Sikkim (as a coordinator and volunteers). Dr. Dhananjay Tripathi Sir is in-charge of the Cell, who is very helpful. Placements are good. If you are hard working and capable enough then surely you will be getting placement from here. Overall statistics for batch of 2024 was that almost 75% to 80% students got placed with highest package of 44 LPA and an average of almost 9.5 LPA. Major recruiters like Infosys, Capgemini, Nvidia, Deloitte, Vedanta, BPCL, BEL, AM/NS, TATA, Technip, Cognizant, Philips, Teradata, and many others visited the campus’ placement drives.

NIT Sikkim provides residential facilities to both girls and boys separately. Currently, 5 students stay in a single room, as the operating from temporary campus in Ravangla but it will be resolved once the permanent campus is built at Khamdong Singtam. The quality of mess food needs to be improved. Hostel in timings are 9 PM for boys and 8 PM for girls.

The institute is under-constructed. There are lots of things to be improved yet as the institute is operating from its temporary campus. The institute will provide you with all the necessary facilities like hostels, Wi-Fi, playground, smart classes, labs, badminton court, volleyball court, and MPH. Interesting thing is that the NIT Sikkim is home to Param Kanchenjunga Supercomputer.

There are so many active clubs and cells in the institute including Entrepreneurship Cell, etc. There are also many departments and clubs like Devcans, Anuvrat, & Tantrika. The institute also has literary clubs like Regnant Ink where you can learn lots of things as a part of co-curriculum. It hosts both cultural and technical fest once a year named as ‘Udgam’ and ‘Abhiyantran’ respectively. In B.Tech, around 160 students get admission in a year. There are almost 600-650 students in the campus. College crowd is not that much with a strength of 160 students in a year and including all four years of btech there will be almost 600-650 students in the campus
