NIT Kolkata: Electronics and Computer Science B.Tech Program

I am a student of B.Tech Electronics and Computer Science. First, this branch is not available in any other college in Kolkata until now. This branch provides me with both IT, core knowledge, and gives me the best opportunity to be placed in both the fields. The department's faculty is great, as they have the relevant knowledge about their subject. The placement records of the institute, and of the particular department are very good. The institute is also full of events and as well as knowledge. The different type of fests that give us exposure to the industry and practical knowledge is also good about this institute. However, one thing that I do not like is some of the outdated subjects like Engineering Drawing; for department like ours, it is a little disappointing. The canteen food is also not up to the mark compared to the price and can be improved.

The course that I chose is very common course, but the department that I am in is a very special one as we are getting the opportunity of both the hardware and software knowledge, which is helping us now in the innovative projects and in future will help in the industry also. You can get admission in the institute through various competitive exams held in India and within the state. In addition, the marks of 10+2 are important for the admission in the institute. The admission process is very smooth and the fees are very relaxed as compared to the others. Our exams are help on monthly basis and semesters are 6 months apart.

The total fees of our course are about Rs. 5,50,000. Semester wise we have to pay Rs. 60,000. The sem fees include all the fees like tuition fees, admission and all. One good thing is that every sem you get books from the library so that you do not have to buy books every time. Scholarships are also provided by the State and Central Government and that is accepted by the institute. There is a special category called TWF and for them the fees is 20% of the total.

The faculty members of the department at NIT Kolkata are very good and friendly and they have good knowledge and experience about their subject. They have all done masters or PhD in the subjects they are teaching. They teach us on smart boards and through PPTs and relevant documents. Assignments are also given to us in regular intervals. Faculties are friendly (most of them) to the students and they are ready to listen to us for our doubts and problems. The student-teacher ratio is well maintained in most of the subjects as it is observed by me.

There is a fully active placement cell in our institute that helps students prepare for their placements, from the 3rd year only. The placement cell is capable of bringing many big MNCs to the campus like TCS, Wipro, Capgemini, Cognizant, Tech Mahindra, ITC, Amazon, and many other core companies for campus placements. Some of the students from different departments are also placed in ISRO and Indian Railways. Many of them get the opportunity to be intern in Microsoft and Juspay. The highest package offered in campus is around 14 LPA and the average package is around 4 LPA to the students.

I am a day-scholar so I do not stay in the hostel. However, as I have heard from my friends, the hostels are decent about food and any other facility. Girls and boys hostels are separate and the timings are strict for the students.

The institute’s infrastructure is more than average. The campus is not that big but it has a ground and a pond area. However, the location of the campus is not good. There are enough number of classrooms and halls for students. Sports facilities are also available for any student studying. The canteen is good but can be improved. Transport facilities are available from the institute, but the institute is situated far off from the city. There is also a well-maintained library for the students with all kinds of books available to borrow. My favorite place in NIT Kolkata is the pond area and its better in the afternoons.

The campus life is very good as there are events always happening inside the campus. Hollywood stars also come to our campus for their promotions and there are two type of fest held in the institute. One is the Tech fest, which includes many types of tech related events and an overnight Hackathon also. The Hackathon experience is very good as I was one of the participants to it. The annual cultural fest is very nice. With various types of artists and very exciting events, students enjoy a lot. The freshers party and any other events are also organised in a very good way. I recommend this NIT Kolkata highly.
