As per NIRF 2025, IIT Kanpur is Ranked 4th in 'Engineering' Category

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur is one of the top Engineering Institutes in India. It has been ranked 4th under the 'Engineering' category as per NIRF 2025. This place is more than I expected it to be during my JoSAA counselling. It offers facilities and opportunities across all areas you can think of, be it academics, cultural activities, sports, and technical fields. Moreover, the student body here is very active, and students' requests are responded to promptly. I chose this Institute for its excellent placement opportunities and the supportive, well-connected alumni network it provides for its students. As this Institute is in a tier 2 city, it provides its own culture and food; I personally like the food here. One thing about this place always fascinates me, that is how student driven it is. The hostel, sports, cultural or fests are handled by students. This is a good place to showcase your leadership skills.

I have opted for Electrical Engineering here at IIT Kanpur. It was based on my JEE Advance rank. Eligibility for opting for this course is based on your rank only. The curriculum here is divided into 8 semesters, each being 4 month long. For each course taken in a semester you have quizzes, mid and semester exams. Courses here provide you a strong theoretical base along with practical knowledge which makes you industry ready.

The Institute provides aid to anyone who needs it based on the income criteria. The semester fee is Rs. 1,00,000/-. 100% scholarship on tuition fee is provided for students with income less than 1 LPA. Other merit based Scholarships are also available like MCM, Donors, etc.

We have outstanding faculty members here. In my department some of the notable names are Professor Aloke Dutta in Microelectronics and Professor Rohit Budhiraja in Communications. Everyone has completed their Ph.D.’s from reputed Institutions and have years of experience in high quality research. The method of teaching varies, some prefer board work to match the pace of students, some prefer PPTs for better animations. Regular tutorials and assignments are part of each course. All the Professors are approachable via mail and conduct office hours regularly.

The Students' Placement Office (SPO) is the student placement body of the Institute. They continuously approach companies to conduct tests/interviews for Internships/placements. They bring in previous year seniors to guide their juniors with resume making session, placement talks and workshops. They provide all the resources as well.

Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur offers excellent residential facilities with good hostels and an attached mess. Initially, rooms are shared by 2-3 students while in 4th year you get single occupancy. The hostels have good infrastructure including a mess, student lounge, reading room, etc. Girls and boys have separate hostel. Mess food is hygienic, warm, affordable and served multiple times a day, with an additional juice counter available. The annual hostel rent is around Rs. 12,000/- and basic mess charges of around Rs. 2500/-. Overall experience is enjoyable.

Campus has a well-planned academic infrastructure where almost every department has its own building with labs. It is spread across nearly 1055 acres on outskirts of Kanpur, and is spacious and beautiful. Classrooms vary in sizes and are equipped with centralised AC, visual aids etc. It has 1200 capacity auditorium. Other facilities include a vast library, student lounges, academic area, and canteens. The best part of the campus is its Open Air Theatre which is the hub of student activity. It has a 24x7 open health centre.

Overall, campus life is amazing at Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Anyone who joins it will surely enjoy it and will call it a second home for rest of their life. The crowd here is amazing; we collaborate and enjoy everything together. It’s like a family here. The Bapu and Amma culture here is unique in its own way. We have student clubs here in almost every field where they compete with other IIT's in the Inter-IIT competition. Annual Cultural Festival ‘Antaragni’ is the best event throughout the year, we also have annual technical fest ‘Techkriti’ and sports fest ‘Udghosh’.
