NIT Jamshedpur: An Undergraduate Student’s Perspective

Overall Rating
It's been 1 semester at the National Institute of Technology, Jamshedpur and overall, my experience has been decent. Not great but not bad either. My rank was 21,000 in JEE Main so I had a lot of options but I didn't want any branch lower than Electrical Engineering. On asking seniors, they said that Electrical Engineering at Institute is great in terms of placements and provides a great work-life balance. So one gets a lot of time for coding and stuff. Usually, it is considered a tough and stressful branch in other Institutes but the case here is opposite.
 

Academics Rating
I have chosen Electrical Engineering from the Institution. You can get into NIT Jamshedpur through JOSAA/CSAB counseling on the basis of your JEE Main Rank. The criteria for the counselling are that you should score at least 75% in class 12th board exams or you should be among the top 20 percentile in your board. There are 2 exams per semester including mid-semester exams which have 30% weightage and end-semester exams which have 50% weightage. The rest 20% is Internal Assessment. The academics does not prepare you for real life challenges, it is for scoring good in exams only.
The overall fee for 4 years is around Rs. 8,50,000/- including hostel and mess fee. Per semester we have to pay around Rs. 1,06,000/- which includes Rs. 62,500/- Tuition fee, Rs. 17,000/- Mess fee, Rs. 15,000/- . Moreover, scholarships like NTPC, NSP, Reliance Digital, etc. can be availed by the students.
 

Faculty Rating
Earlier, the faculties in my department were not strict and gave good marks in exams. But such was the case when the Institute followed absolute grading. Now, that the Institute has started relative grading, I don’t think they will be that lenient. If the professors aren't approachable you will have to connect to the CRs if you have any problem.
 

Placement Rating
Placements are decent here. The Placement Cell is present here and it is very helpful in providing placements to students. A lot of companies visit the Institute and, the placement statistics are great but it includes off campus placements too. The average package for my branch was Rs. 16,00,000/- per annum and the highest was Rs. 1,30,00,000/- per annum.
 

Hostel Rating
The Institute offers residential facilities. The boys hostel for first-year students is newly built and it is one of the best hostels provided in any Engineering Institutions in India. It's a double occupancy hostel for B.Tech students and single occupancy for M.Tech students. From second-year onwards, boys' get single occupancy hostels for B.Tech as well. The boys and girls hostels are separate and recently, a new girls' hostel has been inaugurated which will most probably be single occupancy too. However, the Mess food is average (good for survival but not tasty).
 

Infrastructure Rating
The Institute has a newly built air-conditioned Lecture Hall Complex where our classes are held. The seating capacity is 150 students in one classroom. There is a huge Library with a lot of books and decent Labs. However, Auditorium is not present but will be built soon. Seminars are held in Student Activity Centre. Every hostel has a separate Night Canteen and there is a Cafeteria in Lecture Hall Complex. There is a Dispensary where you can get medical help anytime and also a mental health expert sits there. Sports facilities are also great both indoor and outdoor. Transportation facility is also provided by the Institute.
 

Campus Rating
The campus life is decent. The crowd is good; you will get students from every part of India. Yes, there are a lot of Clubs including both Cultural and Technical. I am part of the Music Club, Dramatics Club, and Quizzing Club. The Institute also organises a lot of activities, fests and events. Branch fest, annual Techno Management fest, annual Cultural fests, and many other small fests.

    National Institute of Technology Jamshedpur is one of the finest engineering Institute of India having NIRF Ranking under 150. It offers various programs like B.Tech, M.Tech, Ph.D in various branches like computer science, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, production engineering, civil engineering, etc. It is located at the jamshedpur city and just 3 km away from the railway junction.
