Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies BBA Review By Alpesh Dhawal

Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies is a deemed university which offers n number of courses and is known for its faculty in management studies. It is a globally recognized institute for management studies. The college is known for providing the best resources for learning and that is the reason students passing from NMIMS have time and again excelled in their career. The institute is known for shaping its student to be professionally proficient and competent. The institute has one of the best libraries and the location of the college too is one of the best. The college has garnered positive reviews from all the students who have passed out and from all the leading rating agencies in the country. The rankings were one of the major factors why I decided to join NMIMS.

The process was quite simple as the students had to appear for an entrance exam called NPAT and the selected students from 1000s who appear for the exams get selected. However, the college does have a management quota as well and nearly 8-10 percent of students come through that quota. I took admission in BMS (Bachelor of Management Studies) which they have now changed to BBA. This is a 3-year degree course divided into 6 semesters. I will be honest about my experience as the college helped me explore endless opportunities, not just through studies but the Vaayu Fest that the college organizes allowed me to try my hands at acting and dancing as well. Hence in addition to learning, the college provides you with opportunities in sports and entertainment as well.

It was compulsory to clear your HSC exam with 1st class to be eligible for admission to the college. The course as describes had subjects related to management. There were in all 36 subjects as each semester has 6 different subjects. The college made sure that they provide training and professional education to all students in all aspects which are related to the management. The course content is designed with a purpose to ensure that their students are updated with the reality of the corporate world. The institute prepares and trains its students in such a way that by the time they graduate they are ready to face the corporate world. The college has state of the art infrastructure and two libraries with over 100 thousand books.

The BBA program of the college is designed to ensure that students not just gain theoretical knowledge but the application as well. However, I will have to say that some of the subjects were just a burden as they were irrelevant to the course. The college also took us for company tours in the final year and I was lucky enough to be placed as an intern at IIFL holdings. The college also organized college trips every year so that students can unwind and bridge the gap between students and teachers.

The college’s faculty is highly knowledgeable and experienced. The professors in the college are quite supportive and are always ready to help whether it’s an academic or non-academic concern. The institute didn’t just have theoretical lectures but they gave equal weightage to practical sessions as well. The practical sessions were tailor-made keeping in mind that the students get an insight into the corporate world. However, during my tenure, the few lecturers quit their job but were replaced soon. There are multiple departments where the students can approach the professors directly to solve their doubts.

I often used to spend my time with my college lecturers for an insightful conversation regarding the phenomenal growth that India is going through. The institute ensures that their student stays up-to-date with all the happenings in the corporate world. We were also given various opportunities to attend guest lectures and conferences to broaden our knowledge and understanding of management studies.

The course BMS which is now BBA is designed to cater to the corporate world to have young managers. Since the college offers specialization courses the placement was made based upon the student's interests. The college attracts companies like Reliance Industries, Share Khan, BNP Paribas, Kotak Bank, and IIFL holdings among others. The average package during our time was around Rs. 4 lakhs per annum and the highest package was of Rs. 10 lakhs.

The college provided us placement training which helped as I was roped in by Kotak Securities and I am still working at Kotak securities. During my final semester, I was placed as an intern at IIFL holdings and that really helped me have a feel of working at the corporate level. I will always be thankful to NMIMS for making me feel confident before I went for a placement interview way back in 2015.

The college has 2 full-fledged hostels three rented accommodations that are taken care of by NMIMS itself. The rented accommodations are separate for boys and girls and are within a walking distance from the college. All the hostels of NMIMS have amenities like a common room, recreation room, mess, TV hall, CCTV surveillance system, 24-hours security, water purifiers, and laundry services.

The hostels were cheaper than the other accommodation that you will find in Mumbai and also better than many residential accommodations.

The campus was built in 1981 but over the years has gone through renovations. The classrooms and libraries were centrally air-conditioned. The library which I have already boasted before has books covering all aspects of Engineering, business & management, pharmacy, and related areas like economics among others. There’s also a sports complex on the campus which has a cricket ground, carom boards, chess boards, and basketball court. I didn’t use them but the campus also has various labs like a chemistry lab, pharma lab, and mechanical lab among many others.

The campus also has a gym, auditorium, and arguably one of the best cafeterias. Also, many banks were surrounding the campus and that helped me a lot. In our days, data was not free but thanks to NMIMS as the campus was fully Wi-Fi and this facility ensured that students spend maximum time of their in college itself.

The best part of the campus is that you will find students from all parts of the country as the students are chosen as per the merit list. There is no kind of discrimination among students inside the campus. The seniors too are quite helpful as they provide the best study material and also make sure that no kind of ragging is going on in the college. However, the only complaint that I had in my time was the scheduling. The schedule sometimes became too hectic owing to dedicated hours that we were supposed to spend on attending various seminars in and out of the college. However, they have helped me to reach where I am today. The college has a gym and encourages students to indulge in physical activities as well.

Unlike many other colleges that offer the same program, attendance is quite strict and if your attendance is below 80%, you are not even allowed to appear for exams. The college hosts a fest every year and that is perhaps the only time when the students can unwind from their jam-packed schedule.
