BMS Institute of Technology and Management is one of the most sought after educational institutions in Karnataka for quality engineering and management education. They aim at making their students not only academically sound but also technically competent in their job environments. The institution strives to achieve excellence in imparting technical knowledge to the students. Not only education, but the college provides a perfect ground for the all-round development of students. The college offers 10 undergraduate degrees and has 13 research centers. Along with obtaining a strong comprehension of basic engineering knowledge, the college is a great place to shape overall personality and get ready for a good career. The institution has been accredited by NAAC, Grade A, and NBA and affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University.

I got admission to this college through Common Entrance Test for Karnataka, and I had a score well-above cut-off ranking. The process was simple that had document verification and payment of the fee. I opted for B.Tech in Electronics and Communication. There are also Comed-K and management seats available in this college.

The college has a curriculum as recommended by Visvesvaraya Technological University. The subjects for Electronics and Communication engineering are spread across 8 semesters with the first two semesters of common subjects. The core subjects are evenly ordered throughout the course, with constant upgrades. Each semester has 3 internal assessments and one external assessment examination. I used to feel that the academics are a burden at one point, but the practical knowledge obtained from the assignments have been helpful in jobs. The quiz activity taken up by the faculty frequently helped us to keep in check of our study progress. The college also offers scholarships for students from the low economic background and also helps students in applying for scholarships from other organizations.

Mandatory project work will be there in the final year, which is great to put our innovative ideas to work with little support from the faculty. The college offers support for innovative research projects by the students in the form of collaborative programs with reputed institutions in the country. The college provides English communication classes for the students right from the first semester to give enough confidence to students while entering their jobs.

The college has well-experienced, highly trained faculty with the majority of them have pursued a Ph.D. Most staff members use new methods of teaching with smart classes and interactive sessions, while a few stick to traditional methods of teaching. The staff helps solve any doubts if approached after classes. Lecturers also guide regarding career and higher academic opportunities. They put efforts in making the students industry ready. In my experience, for students who show curiosity in topics, few staff members take extra effort in solving the queries.

The college also assigns personal mentors to every student, who helps concerning any personal or academic issue. The laboratories have separate staff who are highly knowledgeable regarding practical applications of the subjects. They are extremely helpful in tackling problems that occur during lab sessions. The college also organizes technical conferences, guest lectures, and workshops to expand the knowledge horizon in students and expose them to the latest happenings in the field of engineering.

BMS Institute of Technology and Management provides placement training for its students to prepare for aptitude and general discussion rounds of recruitment with a dedicated placement and training cell. During this time, weekly placement tests are also given to improve confidence in students. The students must maintain a good CGPA over all the semesters to be able to appear for top-tier company recruitments.

The college attracts some leading companies for its campus placement including Dell, Amazon, Mindtree, Phillips, TCS, Wipro, IBM, and others. The average salary package offered during campus placements in the college is about Rs. 5 lakhs per annum, with the highest package peaking at Rs. 19 lakhs per annum. The college encourages taking up internships to have enhanced practical knowledge and exposure to industrial standards. The alumni network of this college is good and they help in providing recommendations for jobs and internships.

The hostel facility is available, though limited and is provided based on distance of students’ native place. Boys’ hostel is within the campus and girls’ hostel is situated 5kms away from the college, for which they provide free pick up and drop facility. Our girls’ hostel had 5 floors of which the top two floors were reserved for management and NRI students. It provides good, hygienic food with a variety of both vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.

The hostels are secure and well-maintained throughout. There are amenities like washing machine, solar heater, generator, geyser, and others. The hostel fee is quite affordable too. The hostels have strict curfew and the students are expected to reach within 8:30 pm. The area in which the college is located has quite a lot of paying guest and bachelor accommodations, which are quite affordable.

The college campus is quite big with good infrastructure. However, the classrooms are spacious and have good infrastructure for sitting and audio-visual aids. The laboratories and workshops are well-equipped with all the necessary equipment. College provides Wi-Fi facility with some limitations. There is a good library that can accommodate about 300 students at a time, with access to most textbooks, reference books, magazines, and newspapers. We were also given a digital library facility that had several courses and training programs from NPTEL and others.

There are 3 canteens within the campus that offers a variety of options with food and beverages, while also being easy on the pocket. Sports activities are limited in the college, but they encourage students if they are good at any particular sport. There are basketball and volleyball courts, cricket ground, and several indoor games. A well equipped gym is there. The campus has all basic amenities including a bank, book store, and health care center.

The campus spread over 35 acres is a place for students from across the country and other countries. It has a good environment for studies. There is no discrimination of any kind and no ragging as the college has a strict policy against it. The gender ratio is good across all the branches except mechanical engineering. My seniors were supportive in terms of guiding career and academic queries. It is a great place to make friendships that last for a lifetime. The campus also provides a great environment to interact with students from different branches and share thoughts and ideas. The campus is a happening place for sports, cultural, and educational events. The college organizes several inter-departmental and inter-college competitions throughout the year. The Tech Transform technical event organized by the college includes over 20 colleges from all over the state. The campus has an innovative cell that receives MHRD grants to work on innovative projects developed by students.

The college fest ‘Utsaha' is a great event to be a part of as there will be music concerts, a hackathon, dance-offs, and other events. Attendance is not strict in this college and the college also offers a lot of free time in the final couple of semesters, which can be used for internships and preparation for higher studies. For those who are interested in taking part in extra-curricular activities, the college has special cells including hiking, go-green, debate, marathon, and others. Overall, the campus provides a plethora of opportunities if you seek to improve yourself in terms of academics as well as a person.
