St. Joseph’s College was one of the earliest educational institutions to be established in Bangalore, founded in the year 1882. University Grants Commission has bestowed the 137-year old college with a ‘College of Excellence’ status, which speaks volumes about the institution’s reputation. SJC has been delivering research, postgraduate, and graduate education for more than 135 years in the state of Karnataka.
The Karnataka Government, following an academic review of the institution, conferred the autonomous college status on the establishment in 2005. The recommendation to grant St. Joseph’s College autonomous status came from the University Grants Commission. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) have re-accredited the college with ‘A’ grade certification making it one of the most sought-after colleges in the country.
The current student strength of the college is over 5500 and has approximately 300 non-teaching and teaching staff members. The Fathers of the French Foreign Mission selected Bangalore for laying the foundations of St. Joseph’s College owing to its pleasant climate. Another good reason for choosing Bangalore as the venue for establishing the college was its strategic location.
The college was founded with the pious aim of furnishing value-oriented education to the Catholic Christian community consisting of 5000 Indians and 1000 Europeans. It was in 1967 that the institution was affiliated permanently to Bangalore University. St. Joseph College was the first higher education institution in Karnataka to enlist students for postgraduate programs in Chemistry and Botany.
UGC accredited the college as an institution with ‘Potential for Excellence’ in 2004 on 3rd November. The college campus houses four distinct academic buildings including St. Joseph’s College, St. Joseph’s College of Law, Pre-university College, and St. Joseph’s College of Commerce. The institution has 10 schools of studies including ‘school of languages’, ‘school of natural sciences’, ‘school of social sciences’, ‘school of commerce’, and ‘school of physical sciences’.
