Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda B.Com Review By Nikunj Jhanwar

I belong to a small town called Kosamba and there was a buzz among the students studying in M S University. We have designated our trains as me and 3-4 friends joined the University with so much of hopes. I won’t say the University failed my expectations as the merit students who joined this college changed their perception as soon as they joined the University. The location of the University is not more than 100 meters from Vadodara Railway Station and Vadodara Bus Stand. This has attracted the large crowd that the college has. MSU Baroda is setup by the royal family of the city and thereby it’s arguably one of the largest Universities one will ever come across. The campus will remind you of some royal palaces and the saying All That Glitters Is Not Gold fits rightly for MSU.

The College assigns a schedule during the start of the year but soon things changes as the time pass the faculty starts distancing themselves and the students are left with no option but to complete the entire portion on their own. The syllabus is fantastic as I have compared our books with that of South Gujarat University and our books are much advanced. The college has taken care of this part but they should be strict in terms of attendance as the students never bothered and so did the faculty. The teachers too started doing the same as they keep threatening us that if all students don’t attend the lectures they will not carry on. The students were left with the duty of contacting all their friends and pleading them to come to the class so that lectures can be commenced. I don’t know where does this kind of education system can survive but with royal family it can and it has.

Initially I though the professors are caring and that is why they are threatening us to come to the classes. Later I realized that the professors themselves wanted to stay and this is why they unfolded such a drama. Hats off to the acting skills as MSU is one University where faculty members too participate in the cultural events. This is where they learned their acting skills because they lacked the skills of teaching big time. I was highly disappointed with the kind of teachers being appointed in the University.

The Post Graduate courses had this option as no under graduate program students got the placements.

I hope that every University has this kind of hostel. First of all the fees is so cheap and the hostel is so large. I was staying 130 kms away from Vadodara and on days when I didn’t felt like travelling back, I used to stay in the hostel. Imagine without paying fees, I could easily stay in the hostel and enjoy all the facilities of hostel. Hostel was more or less a cigarette factory as from all the rooms you can smell smoke. The rooms of the hostel are huge and including both boys and girls hostel the capacity was 1500+. The hostel has no security guard and we can go out at night and no one will ever question. Where else can you have such an amazing hostel. I am still in awe of University hostel as it was hard to convince my parents that yes without paying fees I can stay in hostel for as long as I want.

The college is massive as it is spread across 300 acres of land. There are over 50 buildings in the campus and are maintained. The problem starts with the classrooms as many colleges have adopted the digital way but MSU no. There are not 1 but 2 libraries and one of them is so huge and you can issue any book you want. University has 90 departments and are divided in 2 campuses that the University has. The strength of the college made me go gaga as in my town I have never seen these many people at once. Among other facilities included the worst canteen that one can ever see. The food was stale and the area where it was located the stray dogs made it their den. The huge sports ground was worth it as the ground was well maintained and coaches were appointed to look after the players. The college also has an indoor sports club which requires renovation as the TT tables and carom boards are finished but are not being looked upon. Apart from the area that University has there is nothing worth mentioning as the University is just awful.

From the beginning the cultural events preparations started to begin. Students were approached to be a part of the various clubs that are being run. The biggest was the elections as the campaigns were no less than a political campaign as the candidates will hold a bike rally inside the campus and the management used to cheer that. The University that has produced the likes of Vishal Sikka is in such doldrums and I hope that someone please take a note of it.
