Thakur College of Engineering and Technology B.Tech Review By Vishal Rajpurohit

I was a student of TCET and will give an honest review so that no one is fooled ever. Thakur College of Engineering and Technology has this knack for intervening in every single matter that a student wants to do on his/her own. In 1 sentence there is no scope of growth at all at this college. Thakur Engineering College believes that lectures will give you more experience than the workshop. I wish they went to IIT once to see how students are engaged in projects daily and how important they are. TCETMUMBAI do provide internships but for how long? Just 14 days, why? They don’t want you to miss lectures at all and for that reason, you just have 15 days internship. More importantly, during semester breaks they run a pathetic SDP (Student Development Program) in which many industry personnel will come and teach you about the latest industry trend. Trust me that was the worst program ever that I have ever attended. Never ever think of missing these programs because if you do that you will not be allowed to appear for the placements. I am sorry for being critical but this is just the beginning.

Lectures are as important as anything at TCET Universe. Numerous activities are going on in other departments but for mechanical it is only to sit back and enjoy the lectures. The college in terms of academics has been over strict and over reasonable as practicals were never pre-planned and if the faculty felt that it’s practical time they will take us to the lab. The labs were updated and have all the facilities required. The mechanical workshop has 28 lathe machines and since it was newly made everything was new and wish could have more practical sessions than theory because after my engineering I was so fed up with engineering that I changed the course in further studies.

The teaching was average but a special mention for our maths sir named Bhalekar Sahab. I have never seen a dedicated person like him in my life because he will cover the same topics twice and will make sure that we all are clear with the topic. Rest other faculty will purposely skip portions and will tell this is not important. Most of the faculty never covered the amount targeted for lectures would rather conduct lectures on their will and what all to cover. Today they have left a topic in-between but the next lecture would of a different topic. One last thing, if you are at TCET doesn't ask too many questions because they will never answer and will also register your name in their bad books. Once you are in their bad books means you will get lesser marks no matter what.

Unacceptable is the word and the so-called training and placement cell existed for no reason. They did nothing for the students or rather were not interested. Most of the students are already disqualified for insane reasons. Thakur College of Engineering Placements cell was rather a scam because they charged so heavily for training us and unfortunately if you miss a single session you are immediately discarded for placement. This means all the fees that you have paid for training are gone and if you don’t take this program means you have already disqualified yourself. After all this, some 30-40% of students are left who remain eligible for placements and they do filtration from this as well. After the training is over they take a mock test and disqualify some 10% more through this and we are finally left with 30%. Now out of those 30, I think 20% got the placements and that too in IT firms. Infosys and Accenture as far as I reckon have collaborated with the college and they take students in numbers. They don’t care which branch you belong as after hiring you, they take you for 6 months of their training program and make you ready to work in their industry. This is the biggest reality of TCET placement.

There is a boy’s hostel at the campus that is a common hostel for all the Thakur institutes. I have just seen it and never entered the hostel. I also don’t know anyone from my batch staying at the hostel otherwise I would have criticized that as well.

Here I can’t be critical as the infrastructure was awesome. All the branches had their labs and facilities were in abundance. However, there is one problem here as well and that is there’s no Wi-Fi facility for students here because there is also a school and the institute doesn’t want to spoil the kids. If you find this reason appropriate then you can say that this is also not a problem but in this era, this was a problem for sure. Many students came through donations and therefore the funds were never short for the institute to build facilities which they did as well. The superb Auditorium and state-of-the-art mechanical labs and IC engine model for the mechanical branch were not just innovative but something that was unheard of till then. There is a sports ground that lacked grass but playing cricket in Mumbai’s red soil is something that none of us would like to miss. Thus no complaints there as well. Infrastructure was world-class and there is no minus for this part apart from the Wi-Fi thing.

Some paid clubs in the college will give you a receipt of joining and will connect you only if they need you for labour. Hence this is the first college or the place in India where you pay to become a labour. The fest and all were reserved for other departments as mechanical students we could only stand in the crowd and watch others perform.
