REVA University M.Tech Review By Imran Patel

REVA University was then affiliated with VTU and it turned deemed in 2014 if I am not wrong. Things have changed drastically since then as the ratings and all have dropped down. It was at par with colleges like Nitte Meenakshi Institute of Technology, Ramaiah Institute of Technology, and RVCE, etc. You could choose any college and the syllabus, the placement scenario, and all was great. For me choosing Bangalore was the one way to get close to the IT companies as Gujarat has many good colleges but lacks placement and industrial exposure that engineering colleges in Bangalore provide. In our days every third student at the college was from another state and it is quite common in Bangalore as a whole. We were still in recession as job cuts and all were going on but REVA University still maintained a 90% track record for placements. There were some standard sets of regulations and had to be followed because throwing students out or suspending them was quite a common practice there. As far as I know, it’s still the same and this is why many people have now started looking towards safer options like Pune, and Delhi NCR for that matter.

Intake was limited as VTU has granted just 30 seats to REVA for M. Tech in CSE. The labs and the infrastructure at the college was so brilliant that the strict rules and regulations never looked lame. The class timings were sharp and one had to be at the class 5 minutes before as even a 1-minute late entrant was marked absent. The practical labs were designed so amazingly and the same class was conducted as many times until students had any doubts left in them. Extra classes and classes on weekends was offered as per the student’s choice and luckily they were optional training sessions.

All the faculty were experienced that they could tell about any topic you ask without even asking which chapter does this topic belongs to. Hence never try that but since the quality has degraded the quality of faculty too must have been downgraded as well. In an alumnus meet, we were invited to the college in 2018 and I saw some fresh legs and when asked students about them they just had negative stuff to say about them. Many professors who were at the college while it was affiliated with VTU had left the college. I hope they try and bring them back as they were magicians and their bag of tricks will help the college bounce back.

Not many but 6-7 IT companies trained us as per their requirements during the industrial training. We all maintained good terms with those companies and not any high post but some meaningful roles were offered to the students at an annual package of 7-8 lakhs. It should have been more than double by now if we see the inflation index but not just the package value but the REVA University placement rate which was 90% during our time has also dropped to 40-50% as of now.

The campus was spread in an area of around 50 acres and therefore accommodating a hostel was not a daunting task for the college. There were 7-8 hostels and out of which 4 were boy’s hostel. From A to D, it were boys' hostel wings that had various room types such as single, double, and triple sharing rooms. REVA University hostel was good enough and well maintained. The cleaning services were provided by the hostel and the rooms were cleaned on daily basis. In the 2nd year, we were allowed to choose our room partners and that made things easier for us as in 1st year, I was stuck with MCA students and we only had arguments than a healthy conversation. The hostel also provided food and it was pretty average in my opinion.

The infrastructure has hardly changed and just 2-3 buildings have been added as the strength has increased 3 fold for sure. The lecture hall building was huge and all the MBA, MCA, and M. Tech classes were held in the same lecture hall building and the computer lab was also used by all the branches. The library building with a stock of unlimited books and a separate reading hall was built perfectly. There were 2 canteens at the college and one could get any dish from Chinese to Pizza on demand at the canteen. The college ground is big and was used regularly as Cricket was played mostly during the afternoon and the cricket field was turned into a football arena in the evening. The infrastructure was good but in comparison to my previous college, it stands nowhere close.

Student interaction and stories of their UG colleges was quite interesting. I made friends with students of various other states and knowing about the education system in their state, we all concluded that Bangalore is known for education as it offers much more than other cities and states. REVA though is not the same as it was until it was under VTU. One may leave stunned after seeing REVA University campus is lush green and the blocks are so well maintained. Reva Fest was a wonderful event and the college students also were allowed to participate at the inter-college fests. The life at REVA was crazy and rocking is how I would sum up my review.
