Sri Venkateswara College has a lot of extracurricular activities

Sri Venkateswara College is a great college of DU but not that great for Commerce. The college is one of the best colleges of South Campus. I can’t remember it all as it’s a long time coming for me at the Venky but I hope my views about the college help others to an extent that they can decide whether they should join it or not. There are numerous clubs and societies but it’s the art students that take the maximum footage. The commerce students are lying somewhere in between because nor do the college has students of top quality who can perform for them at the academic level, neither are they provided the opportunity to come to their own by joining distinguished societies of the college. The dance society of the college Verve is one of the best as none other than Shiamak Davar students are sent to teach western dance form to the students. Most of the college students are here to become IAS and therefore they will be found opposite the college gate at Satya Nikethan where there are numerous IAS coaching classes. Venkateswara College DU area is full of students and Satya Nikethan having right in front of the college has made the college buzzing right throughout the day.
B. Com (Hons) is one of the top courses of DU and having favourable numbers and a sports player getting admission through sports quota was easy. For students who want to pursue extra-curricular activities this college is a dream but for commerce students, only the sports team had students from our department. Regular lectures and an attendance of 75% is required to appear for the University exams. The college conducts quite a few exams before the finals and as a student one can gauge how much extra he needs to work to score at the university exams.
For accounting, it has one the best faculty among DU colleges. The comprehensive skills of some of our teachers left me baffled as they had such an impact on us that even the students who failed at least passed in accounting. A single reading of the notes of most of the teachers were enough to understand the topics. The notes were prepared in such a simple language that I never touched my books but rather just referred notes. However, all were not the same as some of them made me think that how can he/she has been roped in as a professor of such a reputed college.
Being a commercial graduate guy, I knew what to expect as expecting a whopping package was certainly not meant for us. Some companies visit our campus regularly and offer internship programs with them. As of figures, the placements for B. Com (Hons) students was around about 3-4 lakhs PA. Companies like Genpact, PWC, EY, KPMG, and American Express visit the campus every year. With almost 9 years now since I graduated so, there must be a surge in the numbers. Most students were seen at the coaching classes for CA, IAS, or MBA so students applying for the placements were not even 40% of the students.
The college started hostel just a few years back before I joined. There was a girls and boys hostel at the campus with 36 rooms in each hostel. The hostel was only for the students who have come outside NCR and the capacity of the hostel, therefore, was enough. Academic numbers was the criteria for getting a berth in a hostel and that means the students opting for the hostel have to clear 2 merit lists. There were 2 dining halls and hostel students had made a committee as all the decisions of the hostel were taken by that committee. The hostel also had a reading room and as a student of the college, even non-hostelites were allowed to study there during college hours. I couldn’t see the rooms but the reading hall was air-conditioned. This is all I could remember as Venky was one of those colleges of DU that has an in-campus hostel because most of the colleges of Delhi have their seats reserved at the university hostel.
There are 2 blocks and for commerce students the classrooms allotted are A3&A4. Thus these were the classrooms where I spent all my 3 years. Classrooms were quite neat and the lab facilities were also at par. Venkateshwara DU has one of the best sports grounds and there are 2 cricket pitches as well. Delhi’s Sonet club for which players like Virender Sehwag and Ashish Nehra have played at our college ground as our ground is the home ground of that club. The college canteen is okish types but why should one worry when one has Satya Nikethan at crossroads. The campus has a branch of South Indian Bank and therefore in an emergency one doesn't have to leave the campus for cash. You will find all the major café’s there and also the students of nearby colleges of South Campus there.
Life at Venky was such that for 3 years I never felt like staying back home and have rest. I wanted to have a piece of it as students were chosen for Nexus after a lot of auditions. Nexus is the cultural fest of the college and the biggest among DU colleges. The footfall during our time for the 3-day fest was around 30000. The star night was ended with a DJ night where not just students but even the faculty members shook leg with the students.
