Indian Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Lokendra Singh

Indian Institute of Technology, Tirupati is the newest autonomous institute in the series of India’s pioneer technical institutes, IITs. If I’ve to deliver the briefest review of this college, then for tech branches like- CSE, IT, and ECE it’s like heaven, but, please try to go for any other institute for the core branches. Founded 6 years ago, in 2015, IIT Tirupati is running under the mentorship of IIT Madras. Since this institute is new and it will take time to get fully established, there’s no ranking like- NIRF, QS, etc for IIT Tirupati. Still, in terms of international collaborations, our institute has been recognized by accreditation with Texas A&M Engineering Experiment Station, Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan, and Calgary University. Additionally, we are in association with CMTI Bangalore, CSIR- CEERI, CSIR- CRRI, and two more CSIRs. Different programs have their respective entrance exams here, IIT-JAM for M.Sc., and GATE for M.Tech, and JEE Advanced for B.Tech. Right now, Dr. K.N. Satyanarayana is the director of IIT-TP. Management is very helpful and far sight.

I joined B.Tech in Chemical Engineering, a 4-year graduate-level course here. A total of 5 branches are there among which the chemical branch has its cutoff of around 13000. This cutoff ranking is for B.Tech course for which one has to go through the JEE Advanced examination and then branches and seats are allotted through JoSAA counseling. It’s my luck that I joined this course even though I’m interested in web development. So, for getting into the CSE branch, your rank must be around 1500-4000. Some subjects are similar to what I’d expected but some are beyond my expectation like- process and instrumentation. These subjects undoubtedly make up a base for making you job-ready but without some industrial internships and real-world projects, it’s of no use. But, one thing which I like the most is we can choose any subject as an open elective according to our taste. That’s how I’m nurturing my web development skills.

In our course, a total of 9 faculties are assigned to us, whereas the overall number of faculties is around 75. Most of them are Ph.D. holders from top-notch universities and have a great grasp of their subjects. All the faculties have previous teaching experience of at least 5-10 years in various engineering colleges. Surely they teach us well but their teaching approach is slightly research-oriented rather than including some job-oriented approaches.

IIT Tirupati Placements are good though this is a new IIT and not well-established yet, almost 90 percent of students got placed through campus placements. The credit goes to our training and placement cell which has broadened its network to top MNCs as well as small startups to ensure employment for all. Fourkites offered the highest package of 22 LPA and the median package was around 9 LPA. Amazon, Microsoft, Honeywell, TCS, Bosch, etc. But, please notice that no company is there from a chemical engineering background. Our batch is the first batch to study chemical engineering at IIT Tirupati. So, it’s a wise option to focus on coding more and more.

To be honest, I haven’t counted the rooms yet, but there are 6 hostel blocks where each room is shared by two students in the hostels. Girls’ and boys’ hostels are totally separate. IIT Tirupati Hostel Rooms are equipped with 24x7 high-speed Wi-Fi and other basic facilities. Food is good in terms of hygiene but every food item has a south Indian touch in it which personally I don’t like and I took too much time to adapt to it. Security is very tight here and nobody is allowed to wander at night and without a pass, there is no entry to the IIT Tirupati campus.

Currently, IIT Tirupati is functioning in two transit campuses at Tirupati- Renigunta road and Yerpedu. Construction work in the 530 acre-large permanent campus is still going on. Recreation halls, gym, indoor games courts, laundry services, and SBI ATM, everything is here. There are a total of 35 classrooms with different capacities but all are well air-conditioned and have an audio-visual facility. Moreover, there is a central library, computer programming lab, civil, mechanical, and electrical workshops too. A playground is also here for outdoor sports like- Football. A health center with an ambulance is available for 24x7 medical supports.

Overall campus life here is okay. Several clubs like- robotics club, literature, and debate club, several technical associations are there in IIT Tirupati. Anyways, up to the first or second year, there is sufficient time to think about college life but after that the only thing that remains is self-development.
