Sri Venkateswara College B.Com Review By Neeraj Karnani

I am baffled on how to summarize the review. The colleges demand discipline, and is surrounded by some of the best students and has an amazing fun quotient. The college is quite particular about attending classes and even though I was through sports quota, I was only given leeway, if my attendance was 50%. For others it’s 75% compulsory. The college is referred as Venky college as it sounds cool. The coolest things happen in the campus as students are loaded with a hell lot of extracurricular activities. As soon as they are done with one, they are ready with the next one. If you get a chance to work with or for the societies then don’t hesitate. That is the best way to bond with seniors and be in their good books. More than teachers, it’s the seniors who will help you in the college. Satya Market was nearby and because there’s everything good about the campus other than canteen, it was Satya Market that saved our day more often than not. I have experienced one of the best times in Venky and all the best to the students who are planning to get admission here.

Admissions are through board exam results or quota that is there. I came to the college through sports quota as 5% seats are reserved through this quota. One should have represented in any national level event and irrespective of results you will get admission. Studies were tough for me as coming from a state board and straightway getting accustomed to DU was not that easy. Attendance was also strict and no excuses even for the outsiders would work at the college. One has to study hard and submit the assignments on time. This is the only way one can survive at Venky.

First of all, there was no peer pressure because faculty of Venky are arguably the best in South Campus. For students who had to devote time in sports or other activities extra classes were arranged on will. You don’t have to worry because faculty makes sure that they train you that much that you at least score passing marks. Once I started working with them closely and realizing that sports won’t take me further, I also started taking studies seriously and from 45% in first year reached the milestone of 63% in the final year. This wouldn’t have been possible if the faculties weren’t helpful.

The placement cell of Venky college is quite active and students are distributed in tiers as per their expertise. Around 10 companies came for the placements and all big names is what I am talking about. KPMG, EY and Genpact among others. The placements weren’t great for B.Com (Hons). A few students did get packages of 10 lakhs but others were denied or were offered the sum that they themselves didn’t take. All in all, the placement scenario wasn’t that great but B. Com doesn’t really guarantee jobs be it DU or any other university for that matter.

Venky is one of those rare colleges that do have both boys and girls hostel. However, the rooms were tiny and plus the restrictions that were there in place, I avoided the hostel and stayed independently. There are many residential facilities nearby college. Hostels are operated with limited seats and a separate merit list for hostel is also in place. The food at the hostel was not that good as some of my friends stayed at the hostel and mostly were seen munching outside the college.

The campus was perfect and surrounded by a lot of greenery. All the college of Delhi seems like have taken care of the greenery aspect. I visited nearly 20 colleges of DU and Venky was probably one of the best colleges of South Campus. Dhaula Kuan metro was nearby and all the other happening places of Delhi like CP, Saket, Rajouri Garden, Vasant Vihar and Gurgaon can be reached in just 30 minutes. In immediate corner of the college there was Hudson Lane and you will have all the restaurants of your choice like 34 Chowringee Lane, Pizza Hut, and Keventers among others. One word for the Momos street stall which was just next to the college. I am sorry but I am a big-time foodie and even if you are not, you will become one, if you stay in Delhi for 3 years. The college canteen is hardly maintained and therefore I avoided that. The college has one of the best cricket grounds with 2 practice pitches. Sonet Club of Delhi uses Venky college facilities for practice. More than college it was the vicinity in which college is located made my life ever so beautiful at Venky.

Nexus the main college fest was the biggest crowd puller. I have friends in other colleges of Delhi who would rush to see our college fest as it was crazy. I never participated but enjoying it from the bleachers was equally satisfying.
