Should I recommend anyone NIT Kurukshetra can be a tricky answer? Well, for girls they should look at some of the problems that I faced. The girl’s ratio at NITK is too less. In M. Tech, we were just 12 girls among 140 boys. Secondly, the college is far from the city, so there’s no city life. The campus is amazing, though, so if they can adjust inside a campus, they will not find it an issue. It is almost impossible to get a cab in and around the college, so one has to be dependent on transportation provided by the college. I have seen hostels of some private colleges, and NITK’s hostel was nowhere closer to it. They don’t even provide coolers in summer which becomes inevitable when you are living amidst 45+ temperatures. These are the only drawbacks because there are plenty of good things beyond them. Studies are undoubtedly at the top as NITK is known as academically one of the most composed NITs.

The studies at NITK were a little serious, even though it wasn’t all research-based learning. It is not a campus where English is compulsory, as most people were seen talking in Hindi. Be it the college management or the students. I could have gotten into NITs in the south, but I know I would have dealt with the language problem. Thus, for students from the North rather than going in fancy NITs of the south, NITK is equally sound, at least in terms of education. Facilities like the labs and all may not be as advanced as what they have, but NITK is quite good for academics.

The faculty was highly qualified and very helpful. Attendance was their main weapon as that was the tool through which they used to keep a check on us. If anyone missed the attendance mark by the slightest of margins, they are gone. So do no matter what but don’t hurt the ego of the professors of NITK as they loved having a full-strength class. So, it was a blessing in disguise because, in any private institution, it’s tough to get professors who have such thinking. Girls wear dear to professors as we were less in numbers. There was enough security at the campus, but our professors were our shield at the campus.

I did my research well before coming to NITK. Placements are excellent because being a master in Electronics; I never wished to work in an IT company that will provide technology. I always wanted to have my skin in the game, so joining a major electric company was my goal. Companies like Philips and Havell's were the top companies who recruited students of our batch. Average packages were around a CTC of 6 Lakhs per annum. If one is concerned about the placements, then study hard for the competitive exams because no private university or college can guarantee jobs like IITs or NITs.

Hostel buildings were fine as they were painted just a year before I joined them. The rooms were fine and also the food as the mess was pure vegetarian. Many of my friends complained to at least start eggs but Thank God they didn’t. Now since all is ok, I still have a lot of complaints about the hostel. During winters, the temperature would go below 4-5 degrees. There were no heaters in the room, and if we use ours, the warden will complain that it will increase the electricity bill. The same goes for summers, as there were just fans, and the temperature of Kurukshetra is too extreme. I felt like, I was in Rajasthan because from Mountains, I was not used to such a climate. Also, I would complain about the timings because, in winters, we had to be back at the hostels by 7.30 while boys could stay for long.

It may look good in pictures, but the infrastructure needs some maintenance in reality. The campus is big, and there are enough trees at the campus to find shelter during summers. However, there’s still room for planting more, and on environment day, our batch took a stance and planted 100 trees. I hope the trend continues because since we went to NIT Surathkal for competitions, I was shocked to see the amount of greenery they have maintained. Coming to labs, even though they need updates compared to other NITs, NITK is still far behind in infrastructure.

Since we were lesser in numbers and Haryana was known for crime against women, I was unsure about the campus. After I have lived there for two years, I can say that the campus is as safe as your home because not just guards, even the seniors, and professors, were kind to girls. Like all other NITs, NITK too invites students from other NITs. So, a competitive feeling was always there at the campus, and honestly speaking, I learned a lot to adjust as this is the best learning you get by staying at hostels.
