IEM Kolkata Campus: Facilities, Libraries, Labs, and More

This college is one of the oldest private institutes in the eastern India with the computer Science department being one of the first to open among other colleges as well. It is also the oldest private institution in West Bengal. This college department aims to provide best facilities and education to the students for their esteemed future and development. After Jadavpur university, NITs and IITs, people tend to select this college due to the higher internship and job opportunities, students will find here. Even if you are from a core engineering branch student, you will still find opportunities in the CS-IT department and hence this is the reason why someone should opt for this institute, also the qualification criteria through joint exams are a bit difficult for this institute, since this is now an autonomous institution under UEM. If you want to compromise little bit of freedom, focus on your career thoroughly, this might be the best option, if you missed JU, NITs and IITs, but I would suggest for selecting the computer science department of IEM over core departments of JU, NIT and IITs (Mechanical, power, metallurgy and etc...). There is also cultural encouragement for this institute where you will find the music, drama, singing, hackathons to be going on every week or so. Overall, this institute will receive 4 out of 5 based on everything.

The Academics of this institute is a bit tough compared to others, but if you are thoroughly focused on your future development, you would definitely find your place here. For entering this institute, you should have a minimum of 75 percent in your class 12th exams if you are going for Engineering and you should apply for the joint entrance examinations like JEE, WBJEE and they conduct their own examinations like IEMJEE. One must score very good in these examinations, like in the top 5 percent, for entering in the top branch which is CSE core in this institution. Kindly keep in mind about the discipline structure of this institution which is very strict, so be prepared for it, but once you have a good control over your academics as well as productivity, there would not be any problem anymore. PCM should be there for entering the engineering department, which is located in Salt Lake, Sector V, college more region, sometimes they might send you to the Newtown region, which is new and not that much old as this is. Be ready for constant exams, hackathons, cultural activities, and tons of discipline lectures.

All the faculties here are descent and many of them being exceptionally good, there is one faculty named KPG, who is in top 5 percent in the world, that faculty alone has published more than 500 papers alone, and is the recipient of a special degree, known as Doctor of Engineering from Jadavpur university. In the computer Science department, you will also find most of the Jadavpur University passed out faculties are teaching, also Calcutta University and IIT alumni. Some of them being alumni of Indian Statistical Institute. The faculties here tend to provide you lot of resources and you will be getting extra classes for all the lectures they teach. All the faculties are very student friendly, and they will always clear your doubts any time even if they are getting in the premises or even after reaching home. The computer Science Department has industry experienced people as faculties, where they were Technical Managers and directors, and also there is a dedicated placement class provided every week to all the students specialised in aptitude and reasoning, which are totally placement based.

Yes, there is a central and dedicated placement cell for all the departments in the college. The placement cell provides opportunities for internships, part time jobs, full time job which are best for the overall experience to be shown during placements. These opportunities will eventually help the student to hone skills and sit for interviews with highest chances of selection. Overall, the placement is very active, seeking opportunities for the students. They always keep posting for jobs and roles for their carrier and professional life.

Yes, there are residential facilities in the institute, hostels for girls and boys, separately. The hostel activities are also descent and the food is average, with the students always arranging activities, drama there. The hostel life is also more or less good. The girls' hostel infrastructure is very descent and that of the boys' hostel is above average.

The college infrastructure is descent with some scope of improvement, but overall, there are enough number of computers situated for each and every student. There is a dedicated Central Lab for the students in the computer science with centralised AC, with the computers containing all the useful software and the labs are divided into hubs for the students. There is a dedicated library which is open 24*7*365 for all the students at the institute. At any time, you can come and sit at the library . There are dedicated Auditoriums with capacities of 1000 students at a time to sit and attend guest lectures. There is also dedicated games room, basketball court and playground for physical fitness. All of them are present in all the 3 campuses of IEM and 2 campuses of UEM which are situated somewhat 10 kms far from there.

The campus life is also descent here with all types of opportunities, not only in academics but also in cultural activities like singing, dancing and drama, there is enough scope for every talent in the institute. There is also enough scope for inter college competitions to be held and introduce best minds there for your talent and all. The largest Techfest known as SMF (Smart Makers Festival) is one such event, the IEMPACT, the biggest cultural event for the college and then the Diversion, "Hackathonic" fest for the hackathons and all.
