Computer Science and Engineering at VIT Vellore

VIT, Vellore is a really great institute for anyone who is interested to pursue engineering. It has a wonderful campus of around 375 acres. It has all sorts of amenities that you expect from a premier institute. I chose this institute for its all round brilliance and because of the fact that it is ranked 11th in the NIRF ranking. I chose this institute because I could not get into IITs or NITs. I would say this as the next best institute to those premier institutes. I would say it is better than other institutes when it comes to hostel facilities and campus life. The one thing that students have to be careful about before joining here is the huge volume of students in VIT. The institute will have a very competitive environment. If that is not an issue then it is a really great institute.

I have chosen Computer Science and Engineering. I chose this because I felt this is an easy to study course and that it is mostly based on logical reasoning. To get into this institute students need to clear an entrance exam named VITEEE. Over 2 lakh students write this exam and only very few thousands of students get selected. Students who prepare for JEE feel this exam to be quite easy, for others it is not so easy. There are 5 categories in which students can enter this institute. Fees differ for each category. Students will have to write an exam as frequent as every month. 60 marks are taken from internals and 40 marks from final semester exam for each subject. I feel that the curriculum here is pretty updated and will prepare the students for real-life challenges. There is a variety of courses available and students can choose whichever course they want to study keeping in mind the core subjects.

There are five categories of fees depending on the student's rank in VITEEE. 1st category- Rs. 2,00,000 per year, 2nd category- Rs. 3,00,000 per year, 3rd category- Rs. 4,00,000 per year, 4th category- Rs. 4,50,000 per year, and 5th year- Rs. 5,00,000 per year. The fees stay the same till the student completes the course. Scholarships are provided to students who are in the top 100 ranks. Otherwise there is no reduction in the fees.

Faculty in Vellore Institute of Technology is really good. There is thousands of faculty in VIT. Most of the faculties are from IITs or NITs and very well experienced. Faculties use PPTs to teach students using projector. Students have to choose faculties. It is based on the students' CGPA. So there is a really heavy competition between students in choosing faculties. Students have to have really good CGPA in order for them to choose top faculties. If students lack to choose a good faculty then they have to study on their own. There is a very healthy student to teacher ratio in VIT. Most of the faculties here are approachable and there is a healthy relationship between students and faculties in VITs. It completely depends on the faculty for the students to get good CGPA. The problem solving abilities of the faculties are quite appreciable.

There is a placement cell in VIT called the Career Development Centre (CDC). It is this cell which mostly controls the placements in VIT. The placements here at VIT are good. The average placement here is around 9 LPA. The highest placement was 1 crore per year last year. More than 850 companies come and visit VIT every year. Some of the most renowned companies are Google, Amazon, Microsoft, J.P Morgan, PayPal, Intel, Apple and many others. Students are trained to attend placement interviews through career development center. Large recruiters are TCS, Cognizant and Wipro. On the whole most of the students get placed. VIT performs above average when it comes to placement.

VIT offers hostel facilities for both boys and girls. There are more than 30 hostels available in here. Hostel facilities are really good at VIT. Students mostly find the hostels to be good. It boasts a huge variety of hostels and types of bedroom. Single, two, three, four, six and eight bedroom hostels are available. Students are provided with mess facilities in their hostels itself. If they do not find the mess to be good they are given a choice to change the mess every month. Hostel fees (along with mess) vary from Rs. 1, 30,000 to Rs. 2, 50,000 per year. Food hygiene depends on the mess students are at. Some mess is very hygienic whereas some others are not so hygienic. Students are supposed to come back to hostel before 8.30 PM. There are much more restrictions for girls in timings. Boys and girls have separate hostels. Deluxe bedrooms are really great at VIT. Most of the hostels have badminton court inside them except for few.

Infrastructure in VIT is really awesome. You have world class building and facilities in VIT. There are more than 7 or 8 buildings with classrooms. The campus is of the size 375 acres. It is located in Vellore a city in Tamil Nadu. Each classroom can accommodate around 70 students. Projectors are available in each class. There is a huge library which is of 7 floors and has thousands of books. There are numerous seminars halls, auditoriums and conference halls. Labs at VIT have world class facilities. Students get hands on experience in every field. A lot of canteens are available in the campus and the food over there is good. Medical facilities like a clinic and ambulance are available. Students get a bus to travel due to large campus size and students are allowed use their own cycles to travel. The best place in VIT is the lake which is really beautiful.

The overall campus life in Vellore Institute of Technology is really great. Students can enjoy a great deal here at VIT. There is a huge crowd in VIT. That is of the major drawbacks in this institute. On the other side crowd management is not bad. There are a lot of clubs in VIT. VIT has around 140 clubs and chapters (bigger clubs). There are a lot of events conducted by the institute. The institute conducts a fest called "Riviera" each year. A lot of celebrities are invited for this fest and it is really great. Students are allowed to join clubs after first semester. Students can enjoy a great deal if they come to VIT due to its large and vibrant campus. VIT is located in the outskirts so students won't find a lot of recreational space around the institute. On the whole a great campus life along with brilliant curriculum VIT is a great place to pursue engineering.
