Tuition Fees and Scholarships for NRI Students at MIT Manipal

My experience at MIT Manipal has been quite good overall. It may not be perfect, but it is a solid balance between academics and student life. A typical day for me includes attending classes, going to the gym, studying a bit, hanging out with friends over dinner, and taking a walk around campus, which is one of the most peaceful things to do here in my opinion. The studies here are not overly difficult but you do need to put in lot of personal effort to stay on track. While not all professors are equally engaging, but some are knowledgeable and supportive. Some of the reasons I chose MIT Manipal was because it was relatively close to my home (Bangalore) and had a good reputation as a Tier - 2 engineering college in India. At the time of joining, it had great placement stats, a strong alumni network and it is known for it is fun and vibrant student life. The thing that makes MIT Manipal standout is the energy of the place. It is a student town through and through. No matter where you go in Manipal, students, activity and a sense of community surround you. This is one of the best things about this place. There is always something happening which makes my environment lively and my experience memorable. This is why you should also consider this college.

I am a CSE AIML student in my second year going into third. I have always been interested in AI from school, and was inspired by my dad who is a software engineer. The course offers me a solid base in programming and AI concepts, which help me in enhancing my skills and interest in the real world. I got in through the NRI quota as a Canadian, which meant I didn’t take MET and just selected my course and paid the fees, which is nearly double that of general students. Each sem has two exams - midsem and end sem - along with which quizzes and assignments are there which will be added to internal marks. If you study regularly, the course is manageable and last minute prep will just get you by. I am currently doing an internship and the basics and concepts I learned this year has definitely helped me. Overall, the course is prepared well and helps you build skills.

As I joined through the NRI quota, my tuition fees are around 7 to 8 Lakh per year, which includes all my academic related charges. Over the course of my 4 years, the total will come around 55 Lakh, which includes hostel, mess and other expenses as well. The hostel fee is usually 2 Lakh a year and mess charges are about Rs. 50,000. Mess is optional from second year. There are not any discounts for NRI students during admission but after college starts, you can get a 10%fee reduction if you get an 8 CGPA and 20%, if you get above 9. Apart from this, personal expenses, which vary for everyone but generally 6 to 7 thousand, is the bill you can add.

Faculty is decent but the experience depends on luck. While not every professor is super approachable but most of them genuinely try to help you if you have doubts. Most teachers use PPTs and board teaching. If you show interest, they are open to helping you with research or guiding you with projects. You will not get an extremely easygoing professor experience but if you put in effort, you can make good relationships, which can help in networking later on. A few professors go out their way to support students and overall it is student friendly environment.

From what I have seen and heard so far is the placement scene is quite good. Even though job market is down right now, the college still manages to bring in a good range of companies. Big names like Microsoft, Bosch and Accenture and regular here. The highest package I have heard is 51 LPA and average package usually is between 9 to 10 Lakh, especially for CSE branches. Seniors even with 7 CGPA or lesser land good internships and offers, which shows how good the placement cell is.

The infrastructure is impressive. Academic blocks 4 and 5 in particular are new compared to others. They come with more modern equipment, making practical labs much better. Classrooms are spacious and fully air-conditioned and can accommodate around 100 students comfortably. Entire campus is huge and because of this, we walk a lot. There is central library with lot of study material and great study spaces. Each AB has it is own canteen which is good for breaks between classes. My favorite spot is Student Plaza as it is very lively and has various food stalls.

Overall campus life is very energetic and fun. The crowd is diverse and friendly, you can meet people from all over the country and abroad. There are tons of clubs to join, technical and non-technical. I am part of a few non-tech clubs and it is great to meet like-minded people and participate in club work together. Zolo is a college partner and organises events regularly, which adds to engagement and fun outside of studies. The college hosts 2 fests, ‘Tech Tatva’, the technical fest in October and ‘Revels’ the cultural fest in March. Both are massive and fun with lot of events, competitions, and food stalls, which light the campus up.
