NIT Trichy's Hostel Facilities: Rooms, Dining Halls, and Fees

NIT Tiruchirappalli is a place like none other. Where does one even begin describing this place, it is a campus so vast that it would take your entire course span to even attempt exploring the entirety of it. The quality of students that study here are best, your peers will motivate you not just on the academic frontier, but also in all of the other walks of life. There are wonderful eateries, some of which are open 24/7 to satiate your hunger. Beautiful buildings and the perennial greenery is present in the campus, making every outing from your hostel, an absolute joy. From the helpful seniors to the curious juniors, from the strict yet wonderful professors to the quirky and kind research scholars, the institute delivers it all.

I am currently pursuing Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering and have just completed my sophomore year in this prestigious institute. I have always been someone who was never sure of what direction I want to take in my life, speaking purely on a career related basis. ME was announced to me as the most vast and general branch, one that can act as a launch pad for me to take off in any direction I wanted in the future and thus, here I am. The entry in the institute is purely through the Joint Entrance Exam conducted by NTA on a yearly basis. One would require close to 99% in JEE Mains to comfortably get a seat at NIT Tiruchirappalli, although the specifics of each branch would vary. A few other basic requirements like a minimum % in your 12th board exams and such are viable and can be read about on the official JEE Website. Post the exam results, the JoSAA counselling takes place and depending on the choices you make one could land here. Examinations inside the institute are conducted in a very simple format. Every semester comprises of 2 CTs (Cycle Tests), followed by a project or as assignment, and lastly the end semester examination. All of these are subject to change depending on the professor, but usually this is what is followed. The academics are sort of on the older side of the educational system, but I still believe they give you a good insight into the fundamentals of the industry.

The fees comes up to around Rs. 2,00,000, combining Tuitions, Hostel and Mess Fees. Remissions are provided to all the EWS and other reserved category students via a form, which is circulated once the students arrive on campus. Financial aids, loans and multiple SICU facilities are introduced during the orientation program for freshers, and scholarships can be pursued via international as well and domestic students.

Faculty at NIT Tiruchirappalli consists of an extremely experienced bunch, along with quite a few new and upcoming young enthusiastic teachers. All have graduated from prestigious institutes and possess deep knowledge about their courses and departments. The teachers are extremely passionate about their subjects and push students to strive for excellence in all of their classes and programs. Methods comprise of PPTs, chalk and talk, group discussions, outdoor learning sessions, online classes, Tests and Quizzes. Teachers often teach using multiple methods and are always open to solve any doubts students may have. The Teacher to student ratio is extremely comfortable and no shortage of either troubles our institute. Some may find a couple of teachers strict and boring, but for the ones who are willing to listen and try to pay attention to anything apart from their phone, the classroom opens them with welcoming arms.

The placement cell of our institute is one of the top facilities in the country. They occupy the beautiful Capstone building and prepare students for jobs and internships in a very stringent and professional format. IPMPs (Internship Planning and Mentorship Programs) are conducted for sophomores to help them prepare for the OTs, GDs and PIs companies would be conducted when they come to take students for on-campus internships in their junior year. CPCs are also conducted in a similar manner for junior year students to prepare them for placements in their final year. Software companies like Microsoft, Google, DE Shaw, Goldman Sachs and several big comes arrive for both internships and placements. Core companies like Tata, Bajaj, Boeing, Exxon Mobil, ITC and other massive names make their presence felt too. Management Companies like Proctre and Gamble, Delhivery, Pernod Richard offer luxurious stipends to students as well. There's no scarcity of monetary opportunities when TnP (Training and Placement Cell) handles things. Stipends for internships can go as high as 2.5 LPA across the domains for internships.

Numerous hostels are present. The institute houses 8,000 students and thus offers a huge hostel complex for students to reside in. There's multiple options like 4-sharing, 3-Sharing, 2-Sharing and single rooms available too. The residential complex for the girls has a separate demarcated zone of itself, which is quite vast too. There's common rooms present in all hostels (total hostels are more than 20). The mess food is decent. There's a total of 8 messes available for boys on campus to choose from, and 3 for the girls to choose from, catering to the different cuisines present in India. From north to south, all kinds of people can be found here. There's a curfew present for women in all of the years they study at this institute. There also exists a curfew for freshers, but it drops out for guys once they enter their second year. My hostel experience has been great as I've found amazing friends for life here. The infrastructure of some of the older hostels can be improved, specially pushing for more western washrooms, but apart from that it's all pretty great.

There's two mains academic buildings, Logos for the freshers and research scholars and Orion for the other engineering students present in campus. Management and Architecture students have their own compounds, which are quite lavish too. The campus size is more than 800 acres, which is full of greenery and bustling energy. Classrooms can easily hold 70 for the smaller ones and 150 for the larger ones, comprise of projectors, smart boards and normal boards too. The library is huge, the laboratories are state of the art, the seminar halls are beautifully maintained and very well furnished too, along with the gargantuan seating capacities of the auditoriums and conference halls too. There's multiple eateries and canteens around campus to grab a snack from, the sports facilities and grounds are ever present and have provisions for all the sports too. Multiple cricket, football, and badminton grounds can be found around campus. There's over a 100 security guards who can speak multiples languages ready to help in case you are ever in need of it. There's a hospital with several qualified doctors, which provides fully free treatment and is open 24/7. There's the wonderful MIG which is the structure of a fighter plane and is life sized; it makes up for a great hangout spot post classes. My favorite part is the tree cover present on campus, as the air quality index matches with your lifestyle once you get in here. There are computer labs and research centers too that can be used for studying and preparing for exams which cater to a lot of students.

The overall campus life is an insane experience, which begins as overwhelming but leaves you asking for more. The crowd is very energetic and keeps pushing each other to greater heights. There's a club for everything at NIT Tiruchirappalli and the seniors push you to be a part of as many as possible, filling colour into the lives of tired JEE students. I have been part of The MUNSoc, Literature Club, Journalism Club, Inter Institute Cultural Fest Team, Inter Hostel Sports and Cultural Fest Team, Inter Departmental Fest Team, Product Management Community and Techno-Managerial fest of the institute. All of these have been amazing experiences and I only wish to enjoy them more. The biggest of the stars arrive to the institute for fests, from Darshan Raval to Kamal Hassan, from Jordindian to Samay Raina, the list is fully studded of Stars. There's extracurricular activities always going on in every week of the institute, the cultural and social fests take place, while the festivals celebrated all across India are thoroughly enjoyed here too.
