BHU Varanasi has Asia's Largest Library

I completed my graduation from BHU Varanasi this year. Being a prestigious University, it holds a legacy, and getting admission there was a dream comes true. The University is known for its academics and campus, and its degree has a reputable image in the market. However, its curriculum is more inclined towards a theoretical side and lacks practical exposure. You will have to look for internships on yourself as the University doesn't provide any.

I was a student of the faculty of commerce. The department offers both UG and PG courses. The University takes admission through an all-India test called CUET, conducted by UGC every year. You need to take the test in the required domains as per the eligibility criteria of the course you are interested in pursuing here. Mine was a 3-year graduation course, and we had approx.6 different subjects each year included in our curriculum. Speaking of academics in my department, it didn't give me any kind of practical knowledge regarding my subjects, the professors just used to explain what was written in the book, we had no real-life case discussions, nor were there any group projects which could have helped us in gaining practical knowledge about the industry.

The education there is quite affordable, and the University offers a lot of facilities to its students, including free medical facilities. My 3-year graduation fee was just around Rs. 6,000/-.

The faculty consists of quite knowledgeable and competent personnel; they have a very strong foundation in their subjects, and some of them are even the authors of the books that we read in our curriculum. But in my department, some of the professors focused more on theoretical knowledge rather than giving us practical insights. However, if you are an active student and like to take initiative, then there are ample opportunities for you on campus itself.

Only a few departments provide placements at the undergraduate level; the Department of Commerce is not very well known for its placements in my course.

This University is Asia's largest residential University, but hostel seats are still limited compared to its demand. Fortunately, I was able to get a hostel on campus. The hostel allotment procedure is based on the combination of merit and the distance from your home. If you manage to get into the hostel, you will get to know a different side of this University; the in-campus life is quite captivating. The mess food quality is quite good; you won't generally find such in any other University. However, you may get bored eventually with the monotonous menu. There are both old and new hostels; the new ones are better-looking and have better infrastructure facilities than the old ones.

The campus is spread across 1300 acres and is full of greenery. BHU, Varanasi has several departments, and most of them are generally quite old. It is known for its old structured buildings, but they are not well-maintained as they should be. There is an overnight library facility available for its students, and an in-campus Wi-Fi facility is also there. We are also offered an on-campus transportation facility. We have a temple inside the campus, which is a tourist attraction; it's a good hangout place for the students.

One thing I will miss most about this University is the campus life. You get to interact with students of various disciplines and make friends with them, which help in enhancing your network and overall personality, and you get to learn about different fields. Every department has its own societies, and students from other departments can also join them. However, there are only a few active societies. Various events keep happening in various departments, and anyone can attend them. We have our annual fest, which is more inclined towards the cultural side. As for sports, you have ample opportunities here; whichever sports you are interested in, you can join them here.
