IIT Kanpur is one of the finest Institutes in India for both academic purposes and student life. I chose this Institute to discover its vast campus along with finest professors with great alma mater. The unique part of this Institute is student's life, which in my opinion is better than other IITs and NITs due to the relative freedom it offers over others. You are allowed to exit/enter the campus any time of the day. Overall, I have a good experience in all perspective.

The academics here are quite disciplined and challenging. The criteria for admission is to have good JEE Advanced rank and cutoff for the particular branch. Admission process is quite simple and does not require too much hassle. The coursework is kind of hectic with about 6 to 7 courses per semester each having a mid semester and end semester exams along with 2-4 quizzes scheduled during the semester. The professors are very much qualified, having completed their PhD from best Institutes from all over the world. To pass a particular course or to get a good grade you have to study hard and maintain good discipline overall.

The fee structure is simple, for each semester there is Rs. 1,00,000/- tuition fee for the General category students, with some waiver for reserved categories. Apart from this there are Mess establishment charges, festival fees and security deposits which add up to around Rs. 15,000/- to Rs. 20,000/-. Scholarships and financial aids are provided for students with weaker financial backgrounds.

As mentioned earlier faculty members are highly qualified and disciplined. There are nearly 20 lecture halls overall in the academic area and all of them have huge smart boards, which the course instructors use to present their course work and annotate the same. Each class has students ranging from 50 to 250 seven 600 for some of the introductory courses. The instructors despite of having studies in international Institutes handle students really well and politely often solving the doubts and entertaining other requests, whether to reschedule quizzes or provide solutions to assignments, etc.

At IIT Kanpur, placements are regulated mostly by the Placement Office, a body maintained by students alone. Over 90% students have been placed this season (including me) with great packages. The average package was around 16 LPA and the highest was more than 1 Crore per annum. The placement drive is generally a one-week drive where recruiters from most of the large companies come to the Institute and interview students. Overall, I have a really great experience.

Hostels are really well maintained with mess facilities, washing machines, adequate number of washrooms and also recreational activities like gym, table tennis, etc. Apart from the fresher’s batch, there are both single and double sharing rooms with adequate space and ventilation. Mess is also regulated by students, so they ensure hygiene and good quality food from workers for all 3 meals in a day. Hostel fees are included in the Semester registration fees, and mess fee for a month is around Rs. 3000/-. Entry is allowed anytime of the day, with guests having to register at the gate.

Infrastructure is also well maintained with all the necessary places present. The library, faculty buildings, department buildings, numerous canteens and shops and food outlets are some of the major amenities. Campus area is 1055 acres with many hostels and a huge academic area. There are ample lecture halls and apart from that numerous small classrooms in other buildings too all with AV aid. There is a large number of labs for almost every department and also an exclusive Airstrip and a hangar with planes in it. Free medical services are available apart from sports and gym facilities. It is almost like a small city in there.

There are around 1200 students in a UG batch coming from different backgrounds. The thing they share in common is the intellect. Despite having a busy academic schedule there are a lot of other activities including inter- hostel competitions, sports competitions and cultural events too. There are 3 festivals in a year with huge xoncerts at night. Then there are numerous clubs and teams ranging from dance and music to Motorsports and Humanoid teams. Talking about Inter IIT competitions are Institute is generally among the frontrunners.
