Jyoti Nivas College was established in 1966 with the vision of excellence, communion, services, and relevance. Sisters at St. Joseph of Tarbes had founded the college. In 2017, India today has ranked it 8th among Arts colleges in Bangalore. ‘The Week’ has ranked it 38th for Science and 33 for Commerce.

Academia follows strict attendance rules; students need to be punctual in all classes. 75% attendance is required in every subject to appear in semester examinations.
The institution offers PUC courses, Undergraduate and Postgraduate courses. Students seeking admission in PUC have to fill the details in the online form available in the college website. For admission in undergraduate courses, the candidate must have passed PUC or any equivalent examination recognized by Bangalore University. Marks criteria for Karnataka students are minimum 50%, and for outside students, the minimum marks criteria are 60%. Admission to Postgraduate courses is based on an interview as well as marks obtained in the degree course. For MBA and MCA course, the candidate must have qualified either of the entrance exams such as K-MAT/PGCET/CMAT or any one National level Eligibility Test.
