Sister Nivedita University MBA Review By Sharad Karnani

Sister Nivedita University Kolkata is a relatively new University and therefore a lot of innovation has been done on their end. SNU Kolkata conducts its own entrance called SNUMAT and for MBA one has to pass that. They also accept GMAT and CAT scores as well. SNU Kolkata has taken care of students in all departments and the facilities provided by them are just too good. The uniform was the only concern as wearing suits in the humid climate of Kolkata was a huge pain. Plus the classes also did not have ACs and at least the University could have done this. Studies part was the best as MBA in sports management was a new course and is in demand since the inception of so many leagues in India. Well, this was not the only reason I chose this as the rest of the other courses' seats got occupied and therefore I had to choose this. At the end of the day though I am happy that I chose this course as I am building a career in the field I love the most.

MBA in sport management is a great course as we were given internship opportunities in the relative field and it was during the course that I learned that a football is made up of 32 panels. The lectures are hard and strict and even the day scholars are not allowed to miss the lectures. SNU Kolkata has increased my learning capacity and SNU has boarded some of the best management to make us learn the course both through theory and practical explanations. The University’s approach to MBA is a little different than the others as in the process of being too strict they have ended up focusing more on the industrial-based study. It was good in the sense that we gained a lot of knowledge and by the time we stepped into the industry we were a tough cookie.

This course is there in some foreign Universities and therefore the faculty who were hired to teach us had the experience of teaching foreign universities. They were more like friends and always taught us the importance of sport. How to create demand and selling policy is all that was taught by them which was not a part of the syllabus but since most of them had the experience of working in the same industry they made us aware of the industry demands and the working culture of the industry.

Sister Nivedita University Placements are good and many companies that sell sporting goods or manufacture sports items were the companies that gave us jobs. IndiaMart, BAS, GM, and BDM were among some of the top recruiters. The average placement was in the range of 6-7 LPA and some 70-80% had a job before the course ended. Before the final placements were done, we also got an internship opportunity and that was more than worth it as we never know how challenging the industry is. We were made tough for the challenges and that has helped us survive even the pandemic time.

I was a day scholar and therefore never saw the hostel from inside. There is a huge boys hostel block and a girls hostel block inside the University campus. Since the University is located in New Town the hostel becomes the best choice for the outsiders. There aren’t many PGs around and for the students coming from outstation, hostel was perhaps the only choice. Sister Nivedita University Hostel also provided food and transportation facility to the students.

From the campus to the buildings, Sister Nivedita University Campus is eye-catching. The classrooms are spacious and equipped with the latest amenities. The library too was huge and had academic as well as non-academic books collection. The University sports ground was great and has been used by domestic players for practice. Not just cricket but the campus also has a football ground as well. The college has a huge auditorium and a state-of-the-art computer lab. Have gone through the engineering labs as well and even they were brilliant. In all the infrastructure is majestic and picturesque. How can I forget the shooting alley as the University also has a shooting alley and the Olympic medalist Gagan Narang has been the guest of honour for the shooting event during the sports week.

Bengal and its love for art and sports are evident. The University promotes them both and even MBA students were advised to choose one of the clubs. I chose Judo as I did that during my school days and will admit that some of the best coaches were hired. Their coached girls got the back of boys and this how hard the coaches trained the student. Learning a new self-defense art called Jujitsu was fun as this was one thing that I learned beyond academics at the campus. The ones who are into arts have even more opportunities. The singing club and the drama club have performed at various theatres in Kolkata and have bagged awards and some of the University students have also bagged offers from notable filmmakers of the Bengali film industry. The University fest and other events have garnered news at the city level and all the local media covers the entire fest and events. SNU may not be compared with top B-Schools like IIM-Kolkata or others but I had fun at SNU.
