Jesus and Mary College B.Com Review By Shaili Kumari

I am a graduate from Jesus and Marry College and I would love to share my thoughts on it. JMC certainly has the best crowd among all the colleges of DU. The cut off is nearly 93% and therefore you can imagine that only smart girls get an entry here. Lectures happen consistently and studies are not as chilled out as other colleges of DU. Many students of DU do go for coaching but if take lectures seriously at JMC, you will not have to go for any tuitions or coaching after the college. The timing of the college was an issue as 7.30 am, we would have our first lecture and in Winters it was pushed till 8 am. Still, early for the ones who love their morning sleep. Not just in or around Delhi, JMC is famous all across the country and girls of various other states come and study here. Delhi which has a significant crime rate against women, JMC is safe inside as well as outside as the college is located in one of the safest areas of the Delhi, Chanakyapuri. There are a few points that if college can look after would be really great. First and foremost, the college doesn’t have a hostel. Metro is little far as you have to take a sharing auto that charge you 20 bucks. Attendance is just as strict and sometimes students just have to plead for that extra 3-5%.

Lectures are always held on time and studies are at par with other famous colleges of DU like Miranda House College and Lady Shri Ram College. The college has a wide range of courses to choose from and the college has an environment that is quite conducive for learning. Along with studies the societies of the college are quite active and along with studies the college provides a unique culture to grow socially.

Faculties were chilled out but only if you attend regularly. Not much biasedness but those with best attendance rate do get some extra in the practical exams. I wish I could do that but not an issue as all my teachers were quite happy with me as I may be the last one standing during the practical but I always gave my best. Faculties were supportive and could lend you help off campus if required.

It’s easier said than done that placement at JMC are placed safely. The reality though is different as many girls who quit after graduation are still at home as neither did, they got campus placements or they could find placements off-campus. Yes, a lot of companies were invited and they did offered job to a handful of girls. More than the jobs it was the kind of jobs that were offered pissed me off. Most of them needed sales executive and it was never my forte, I decided to pass the placements and look for further studies.

I already mentioned it as a negative of the college because though less but there are girls from other parts of India. Many girls used to travel daily from Faridabad and Ghaziabad and it took them 2-3 hours of travel daily. A hostel may help the college cause as then it would be able to get few more students from other parts of India. Having characters around is important and that is why I feel, a hostel is the need of the hour.

It may not be the best but for sure one of the best infrastructures in DU. The college has huge classrooms that were well ventilated. The college has a park inside and at lunch time most of us would gather there. Talking about lunch, don’t you ever feel sad if you have missed your tiffin because college canteen is amazing and Bhel Puri of the canteen reminded me of my Mumbai trip as it was straight from the kitchen of some Mumbai’s famous Bhel outlet. The college library is huge and probably one of the biggest as it was well stocked and well maintained at the same time. The college’s locality is among the best localities of the city and driving our way back home please me immense as we were surrounded with some of the best hotels and coffee shops of the city.

There are many societies that are highly active. Once you join them, it will give you an opportunity to grow as a person. Girls though always think that are matured enough but societies helped me at a personal level as I was more than happy to be associated with college’s drama and social club. People used to fight to come and watch our cultural fest as it was as glamorous as a Bollywood award night.
