At UIIT students get ample freedom but it’s on individual how they can maximize this freedom. Being a government college, it holds prestige more than private colleges. The only problem was the Shimla’s weather as it was so serene that I found it quite difficult to study. Placements were good too as most students opted out as they wanted to study further. I am also one of those but UIIT will get you placed if you want to. Overall, the staff was good but it would be fairly better if some of those are replaced because they are at UIIT since ages and feels that the college is theirs. At UIIT, you will have the opportunity to get a lot of exposure through cells, clubs, and tech team. One common issue that most of us faced was that Shimla hardly had any good CAT coaching institute. I was though more interested in GATE and I couldn’t make it to IITs but many students from my batch did, so can’t even complain about that.

Everything was good about the academics like the faculty, regularity, labs, and the classrooms. The only problem I saw was with the course. The content was old as we had access to books from IIT and other prestigious institute and the syllabus they had was quite advanced. Even the internship provision isn’t done by the college, so look around yourself and if you get any such opportunity, the college is more than happy to give you a NOC. We all mostly went to Delhi or Bangalore as they are the places where all tech companies are positioned.

They were great if not the greatest. Hand handling in a government college was anyways never going to happen but they still spoon fed us as much as they could. They actively made us learn skills because they knew that only course textbooks will not help us cross the river. Again, the only problem here was the contract based faculty who kept changing between the semesters. I am not a critical person but it is important to let my readers know that there weren’t just pros as even the best of institutes have cons.

Well, I am not adding spices on my own but many students had two offer letters. Like I was not placed by choice or else, I would have placements from the campus. UIIT which is now UIT has done quite well in bringing all the top tech companies to its fore. You name it and they were present there. The likes of Wipro, Infosys, Oracle, etc. were quite happy to test us. All the students passed their tests as we were all ready and raring to go for placements. The figures were slightly below par as jobs offered were in the range of 3.5-5 lakhs. They should have raised the bar a bit, they would surely have more students because at UIIT students decide whether they want job or not. This is the placement power of UIIT and since, it has become UIT, and the power has only increased.

It was a shame that such a good college and no hostels. I was happy that I was staying independently but because of that the college became more of an all-boys college. The HP university campus has many hostels but they are not for UIIT students. In IT colleges, the ratio is 70-30 favoring the boys but at UIIT, it was 90-10 favoring the boys. All because the college doesn’t have hostel. Shimla provides some of the best to let houses. The rent too is quite nominal so studying at UIIT will not cost you much.

During our time, the college was located at main campus of the university. The lecture halls of the campus were called lecture theatres as they gave us a theatre like feel. UIIT building was a four-floor building which is equipped with 8-10 labs, a library and a computer centre. Apart from hostels, students were free to use all the facilities of the campus. There were two cafeterias at the campus. The campus auditorium was one of the biggest that I have seen in my life. There were multiple sports grounds and playing cricket in the serene weather of Shimla not just kept us healthy but made us hungry for more. There was a hospital at the campus along with a branch of SBI. There was a small market place inside the university campus with nearly eight to ten shops.

UIIT was inside the university campus, so after college hours I used the facilities to good effect. We could stay at the campus for as long as we wanted. The cafeteria operated till 10 pm in summers and 9 pm in winters. I hardly missed the food at cafeteria as Shimla is a laid-back city and once you go home, you will hardly come out of your sheets or rather blankets. So, the campus life was fun to the moon.
