University of Engineering and Management B.Tech Review By Prakhar Kharone

I took admission for my B. Tech in 2016. 'UEM' was a new College for me. The admission process was completed with ease and there I was at UEM. Having relatives in Kolkata, I stayed at their place instead of the hostel. Kolkata was also new to me but the people in the city and students at the UEM both welcomed me with open arms. The Bengali people are born with the gift of gab. The College accepted me pretty fast, and I also adapted myself to the new surroundings. UEM is very strict in its discipline and on the surface, the rules might feel like restrictions, but this teaches a lot more on the inside.

When I started to search for Colleges for B. Tech after my 12th, one thing I had an eye out for was academics. I had heard about the strict academics of UEM and hence decided to go for it. There are entrance exams like IEMJEE, WBJEE, on the basis of rank you get in one of these exams admissions are decided. While studying at UEM, you hardly have any time for other activities because your classes schedule is so tight, there are no way you get extra time to waste. There are many tests, sessional exams, and workshops throughout the semester, but projects are more fun. You have to do projects each semester.

With 30+ faculties in our department, not everyone has simple teaching methods. The complexity of teaching methods varies from teacher to teacher. But every faculty has its own gem of teachers, which is also loved by students. Most of the faculties have teachers with experience. Afterall, more than the knowledge and experience of a professor is one of the best help a student can get. The faculty members have completed their masters and some are PhD holders. The most admirable thing about the faculty is that they are friendly and soft-spoken. Whenever you need help, they are there. Even lunch breaks are also used by teachers to solve doubts of some students.

The highest package offered at UEM was 40 LPA. You can imagine the competition for placement and the level of that competition. 75% of the students receive at least 1 placement offer. The rate of students getting placed in companies like Capgemini and Wipro is rising day by day. In fact, Capgemini and Coforge have signed an alliance with UEM to hire students. Big people like ministers have visited the campus of UEM and have urged companies to hire students from UEM. Students from CSE have more scope for placement than any other branch due to increasing demand for IT in the market.

UEM provides hostel facilities for students. Due to the small campus, both boys and girls hostels were outside the College. Some of my friends used to stay in hostels. The College and hostel buildings were new, so rooms were in good condition. Although the boys hostel is right beside the College campus, the girls hostel was a bit far from College. The College provided buses for the transportation between girls hostel and College but after College the buses used to get stuck in traffic; so almost more than an hour had to be wasted to reach the hostel.

UEM has no big campus, just two College buildings. It doesn't include any playground (only basketball ground) or parking space. Though a small campus, UEM tops for cleanliness, it maintains the campus area. The canteen is also hygienic and serves good quality food. My favorite part about UEM is its digital library. More than 2.7 Lakh books are in the UEM library including magazines, journals, books, etc. The classes have good conditioned chairs, smart boards for presentations and seminars. UEM also has separate seminar halls. All the laboratories in UEM are well equipped with different apparatus and well ventilated.

Bounded by many restrictions at UEM, students still enjoy College campus life. The UEM campus has it all, including a cafeteria, auditorium, library, basketball playground, etc. Annual sports and events are the life of College. UEM also has clubs to impress students in having extracurricular activities. At UEM College, I felt like we engineering students dominate over any course students because of the number of engineers being way more than BBA students. But in the end, all students share a good bonding with each other during fests and events. Many traditional festivals are also celebrated on the UEM campus.
