National Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Navin Toppo

An institute that is existing for 60 years will have some loopholes but overall, the institute is 9 on 10. Some might give it 10 on 10 but because I was badly trying for IIT Kharagpur and made it to an institute which is lesser on all aspects has taken away that one number. All that institute need is to instill some advanced academic facilities and I will rate this at par with any IITs. Having said that, placements have maintained its standard and from what I saw, it will only break records in future. We were put under tremendous pressure academically as M. Tech is as tough as doing any medical science studies. One can get brain struck because errors are a part of our course but performing under pressure is what we learned at NIT Jamshedpur the most.

The academic infrastructure was little backward as the class rooms were old and not upgraded as almost every institution has. The learning method was old as the professors would read out the entire pages of the books and ask if you have any question. It was because of this method that our portions were completed just a week before the mains. One has to stay ahead of the situation is what I learned at BIT MESRA but NIT JSR haven’t adapted to it. Well leaving all this aside there were a lot of positives to take from. Students were prepared to represent the college in various seminars and conferences. I personally represented at a quiz organized by CNBC TV 18.

At such institutes questioning the faculties credibility would be foolish. Amid all this, I was sad to see that some faculty were unwillingly teaching us. Even to take their signature, they showed so many attitudes. Luckily, some new Ad-Hocs have been appointed who were much more supportive than the old teaching staff. They solved most of our questions and offered genuine help when we needed it. Their guidance has taken the students of my batch where they are today. So, I can keep gushing about the ones who were not so good and keep boasting about the ones who were great.

Our batch saw a colossal improvement in placements. I saw the placements of our last batch and we almost doubled it up. In our previous batch the placement was 75% while in ours it was quite close to being called 100% placements. If I list down the companies for respective departments then there was Oracle, Adobe, and Amazon who took care of Computer Science Students. Mechanical branch students were hired by BPCL, L&T, Tata Motors, and Tata Steel. Some of them were even sent straight to Tata Steel operations in Netherlands. The Metallurgical branch students were supported by companies like Tata Steel, Tata Metaliks, Vedanta, and JSW Steel. I will rate the placements 9.5 on 10 and if I was still studying there, I would have probably given it 10 on 10 because the improvement in NIT Jamshedpur Placement was seen from our batch itself.

NIT Jamshedpur Hostels were marvels be it boys or girls hostel. Students pursuing PG got a single seater room that also had a balcony. The view from balcony was mind-blowing especially in the morning. Just close to the boy’s hostel compound there was a tennis court, volleyball court, and a basketball court. The boy’s hostel was not more than 100 steps from the academic building, Computer Center, or Sudha. I think I have eaten up too many words describing the exterior part so let’s come to the most important part and that’s hostel life. I personally enjoyed the midnight talks the most. We used to find a new topic every fortnight and let the entire hostel have their view on that. The major fun used to take place at the mess. Amid enjoying the mess food, we used to curse our teachers, criticize the grading system, and some important discussions. The best part of hostel life was consoling our friends who suffered break-ups at the campus. The terrace used to remain open and we used to play soft music under the stars. Last but not the least, whenever I was sick, I saw the entire hostel coming and asking me, Am I Okay?

Most infrastructure was refurbished and still the labs and classrooms need a lot of attention. They were good but facilities wise, a lot more can be done. One thing that has changed from past is the roads at the campus. A newly built conference hall was a sight to be witnessed. Other facilities include a library, Sudha Centre, Computer Centre, some sporting facilities, and two great canteens.

An institute that has supported the extra-curricular activities as much as it has supported academic, one will enjoy NIT Jamshedpur Campus life the most. There was a techno management fest every year called Ojass. Apart from that the annual fest Culfest was our most awaited event because it was PG students who took the cake in the event. Those two events were the most enjoyable events of our campus life.
