Indian Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Jyotimani Jha

After hearing so much about the Institute, I made my life difficult during B.Tech. By studying as hard as I could until I got the finishing kick to reach the College of my dreams. A good solid Institute or should I say one of the greatest assets of India. That has made some of the top engineers of the country. The fees at which IITR provides its M.Tech program is unbelievable. A placement of 10 lakh from here, after doing M.Tech is about par. What an astonishingly good College it is and I am finding it difficult to put all my experience in words. The College welcomes the toughest or the brightest minds to its campus. At times, I felt devastated because in M.Tech one has to be with their books for 20 hours in a day. Nobody can gamble on the fact that because they are at IIT, they will pass and have the top placements. One has to work as hard as they can, if they are aiming to get the best out of the Institute.

In case you are thinking that it was all classes and studies then you are wrong. The College has some of the best labs for civil and even in a compact lab; we learned how to develop Infrastructure. I was unhappy, as I thought we would be sent to sites for practicals, but the labs were more than justified. We were sent to infra sites from highways to buildings, we saw it all. The mechanism required to build a nation is what we were taught. And needless to say that their academic system has worked the best.

Faculties were masters of making finishing products. Out of the batch of 140 students, only 60 passed in the first attempt and don’t know what happened with the rest. I am sure they would have got full support as the faculty did everything to help students out. The faculty didn’t play with the tickles. As they made our lives even tougher after spending 8 hours in classes. We had to spend equal time with the books after that too. There were 14 faculties of our department, but they were the best-cooked faculties of the country. So, an excellent word would be like underplaying with the kind of caliber they had.

Placements were the most brilliant thing that happened at IITR. The game was over in 15 days, as placements started in mid-January and before February came. All those who had cleared all their subjects till then, were placed in some of the best infra companies of India. Like HCC, Gammon India, DLF, and Shapoorji Pallonji & Company to name a few. The placements went down without fighting. As it was not at all a sorry tale for students, to get placed with some of the most attractive packages. So, placements of IITR are well and the best in the country.

Great credits to the newly built bhawans of the campus. The old bhawans or the hostel buildings were in a sorry state. But the new ones, on the back of outstanding facilities, made them the best hostels of the country. Other than the boys and girl’s hostels, for the first time in my life. I saw married hostels and a co-ed hostel named 'Vigyan Kunj' at IITR campus. The College may be old, but the College management's thinking is much more advanced. As the office bearers have made the hostel life at IITR worth remembering, till life. What a hostel and what a hostel life, I had at IITR that it’s tough to put them into words.

Infrastructure was pretty ok. Because the size of the campus is one thing and what could have been done better is another. New constructions are on, a new campus of IITR is ready in Sahranpur but the old campus too needs some changes. The best part of the campus were its hangout spots. From 'Georgia Café' to 'CCD' outlet. The restaurant was not for our cravings but was also the centre of our discussion meetings. The best restaurant at the campus was 'Alphar Café'. One thing that was unimaginable at a College campus was the love for all religions. This is why there was a Temple, Church, and a Mosque inside the campus.

For PG students there was a Jawahar Club House where we used to play pool snooker, foosball, and carrom. The campus life delivered to us at IITR was beyond imagination. As this was the brightest prospect of the campus. It was tough to find time though because we had so many plans. But studies never allowed us to enjoy campus life to the fullest. The environment at the campus is a result of continuous process. That the Institute has maintained for over 100 years now.
