Hostels at IIT Roorkee are Referred as 'Bhawans'

Let us start with the basics, I am a 2nd year undergraduate student of IIT Roorkee, and currently I am pursuing Bachelor of Technology in Biosciences and Bioengineering here. I am writing this review to just share my experience in this campus, how the first hand experience here is, how I expected things to be and how things turned out to be and how I enjoyed my first year and how you could too if you decide to choose this Institute. It was 8 am in the morning when I first entered through the Century gate of IIT Roorkee and oh only I know how I felt in that moment that I have achieved everything I ever wanted. The campus here is huge but does not look empty, so you would not know before you complete a whole round of campus. Talking about the clubs, here are many cultural and technical clubs waiting for you guys that keeps you occupied throughout the 4 years. The overall experience here is quite nice when you actually get the hang of living in hostels.

I chose this branch for none of those reasons, the reason for choosing this branch could be first that this was the only decent branch I was getting in this one and second could be Biotech is comparably chill in academics so one can focus on extracurricular. You need to get around 6000-8000 rank in JEE Advanced to get admission into this branch and no other particular criteria. The admission is very smooth; you would not get any problems with the admission. For the department courses, you just need to focus on attendance and a little study; you would get more than your desired grades. The academics here can certainly teach you new things but it might not help with the real life challenges, you need to figure that out yourselves very obviously.

Fees here is quite well, I mean comparing to Private Universities it is very good for the facilities you are provided that is. Each course has the same fees here but it varies for different categories. Many scholarships for women, categories, academically good students and yes a handsome amount too.

The faculty thing is very subjective but for some cases, everyone would agree. The faculty of my course majorly emphasizes on maintaining good attendance. The faculty is quite good as everyone specializes in their field and has done their degrees from some much-esteemed universities. Every faculty has their own way of teaching some taught boards, some using PPTs but generally, PPTs are used. Many courses in the department are lab and computation based so you do not get bored that is. They can be friendly if you connect with them and show interest while they are teaching otherwise you might find some problems later.

Yes, separate hostels are available for boys and girls. We called them 'Bhawans'. The amenities & infrastructure in all the Bhawans is world class. Badminton courts are there in each hostel, table tennis room, squash room, two cricket grounds, two football grounds, and a hockey ground. However, I wish food were somewhat more hygienic and fresh.

Infrastructure is good here. The buildings are well built & hostels too. The main highlight of infrastructure here is ‘Thomson Building’, and the ‘ECE Tower’, which used to be a watchtower in old times. Everything here used to be something major in the past, The Convocation Hall used to be a Hanger for fighter jets. The buildings are well built for such uneven platform; the roads are sometimes steep and sometimes straight. The campus of IIT Roorkee is one hell of an infrastructural marvel. The campus has 3 volleyball courts. Apart from the ones in the hostels, 4 tennis courts, 3 basketball courts, and a badminton hall are also there.

The overall campus life is good. The Institute crowd is good. The seniors are great and share their experience it is like a culture here to stay with your juniors and guide them in everything. The fests are crazy here just amazing cannot describe in words, just that amazing, to feel it you have to experience it firsthand yourselves.
