IIT Bhilai's 3rd Gen Status Offers Unique Academic and Career Opportunities

I chose IIT Bhilai because my rank in JEE Advance. One of the other reasons why I chose this institute was because of one of my parent’s friend's son studying there. I could have gotten CSE in some of the good NITs but the IIT tag seemed very promising so I went for it. My experience over here has been average. When we first arrived, we were still in the transit campus but were shifted to the permanent campus in my second year. There were only 5 branches initially in UG program but now there are 7. The institute is new therefore, the infrastructure is significantly better than some of the older IITs. Being new has also resulted in some of the technology not being present here. The opportunities are coming up and fewer people also mean more opportunity. I get many opportunities here since the number of students is less.

I chose Mechanical Engineering. I am currently doing Honors in it. I chose this branch because of my rank but fell in love with it. The criteria for joining the institute is clearing JEE Main and JEE Advanced. You have to get a certain cutoff rank, which is more or less near the previous year's rank. JoSAA counseling in what you get enrolled in and the process is simple. After confirming the institute and all the rounds getting over, you get an email form institute and you are guided through everything.

Semester wise fee (including mess and hostel/ cannot stay out of the hostel) - Rs 1,49,000. The fee structure include tuition fee Rs. 1,00,000, Hostel fee Rs. 36,875, Dining Fee Rs. 23,200, and Other fee valid as well like medical, etc. Special discounts are available based on family incomes and Caste. Some other charges include Onetime charges, which include Rs. 7,000 (Admission fee, Id card, Celebration fee, etc.)

Most of the professors have done their PhDs from very reputed institutes in India. Some even did it from abroad. The research is good as well. The teachers teach from books, blackboards, PPTs, group discussions, demonstrations. The faculties are highly talented in their fields and are mostly approachable for doubts. We also have a faculty review system for students at the end of every semester. Teacher to student ratio is 50:1 but can go upto 500:1. I am close with some of the faculties through science clubs and my research work.

Placements are not exactly the best maybe because of the current scenario of inflammation. Still there are companies coming. The placement cell works extremely hard here. The placement calls companies and ask them to come to our institute. The average package is 12LPA. Highest would be 40 LPA. Google, Amazon, Nvidia, Warner Bros, etc. companies come here.

Yes, it is mandatory for the students in UG to stay in their hostels. There are big hostels with two for boys, one for girls, and one for married students. The girl’s and boy’s hostels are separate. There are huge apartments for faculties with basic amenities. There are no timings for hostel. You should be inside the institute campus before 11 PM. Hostels are great, there are lifts everywhere. We have ACs in our rooms.

The infrastructure is very beautiful since the institute is new. Everything is planned. The campus is built in approximately 450 acres of land. There are several kinds of lecture hall ranging from 50 to 500 occupancy. The library is stocked with many books. The labs are equipped with new technologies. There is a central prototyping facility as well as central instrumental facility. There are many eateries in the campus itself. There is a health centre with 24/7 ambulance. There Isa post office, an ATM, SBI Bank, gift shop, and a departmental store with everything you could require. There are grounds for sports like basketball, volleyball, badminton, and football. We table tennis tables as well. There are recreational rooms. We also have a helipad. My favorite part is the astronomy tower building. There are many technologies just catering to mechanical engineering department.

The institute life is great. There are minimal restrictions, and the campus is very safe. We celebrate all the festivals here. There are so many clubs and societies you can be part of in the campus. The institute crowd is not that big but it is still good. There are clubs for coding, robotics, data science, electrical, aerospace, motorsports, dance, music, literature, mental health, LGBTQ, photography, video shooting, editing, art, etc. I was secretary for Mental health and LGBTQIA society. Also was an integral part of music club and literature society. We have an annual fest Maras. We also have sports and cultural events called Anveshan and Prayatna plus regular club activities. The overall experience for me was good.
