SXUK Kolkata's Law School: Admission Process, Fees, and Academic

St. Xavier's University, Kolkata (SXUK) established in 2017 is a private university offering UG, PG and Doctorate Courses. Xavier's Law School (XLS) has been approved by Bar Council of India. XLS started with its first batch in 2019. SXUK not only involves students in academics but also into other activities such as sports, both inter and intra competitions etc. and there are various committees which keeps your college life both busy and fun. SXUK offers great faculty along with multiple events which helps students to enhance their skills.

I opted for B.A.LL.B (Hons.) five years course offered by Xavier's Law School. To become an advocate and practice law was my career goal. For admission in XLS students are required at least 75% results in 12th boards and one has to clear Xavier's Law Admission Test (XLAT) alike CLAT in offline mode. Difficulty level of XLAT was moderate with good preparation. Admission process is smooth and you may be required to visit the campus once or twice. They handover ID cards after admission which one has to carry the whole time in campus and for entering into campus. In this course there are 10 semesters, and each semester has two examinations one internals and another End Semester. Hence, total 20 examinations. XLS and it's faculty has always given their best to prepare for real life issues a law student may face in practical.

Fee of B.A.LL.B is around Rs.7.00 Lakhs to Rs.8.00 Lakhs. Admission fee is Rs.30,000/- for all courses and per semester fee till 6th Semester is Rs.60,000/- and afterwards it's Rs.72,000/- per semester. However, Scholarships are available and one may need to reach out to the administration department for the same.

Faculty of XLS has always been helpful, cheerful and very knowledgeable. They are experienced in their subjects and mostly the faculties have done either master or doctorate in their fields. They tend to deliver the lecture with blend of PPTs, White board, Smart board and even by tests. One can reach out to the professors for clearing doubts or for guidance whenever they are free. They are friendly and make you understand concepts clearly with practical information and with case laws.

XLS Placement cell was established in 2024 when I was in my last semester of the course. It has a board consisting of students and faculties. Placement Cell helps students by inviting the recruiters from outside to the campus for recruitment. Since placement cell was established very late hence, very less percentage of students got placed with highest package of Rs.6.00 Lakhs p.a. As compared with the departments of SXUK Xavier's Law School placement cell lags behind and it helps only in jobs and not in internships which is required for the completion of the course.

SXUK campus has separate Girls and Boys hostels and a lot of competitions and face off keeps going among the hostellers. Mess food is average in quality and breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner is provided by the mess. One can even eat in campus canteen if they wish or order online. SXUK is very strict with hostel rules one has to enter the campus within the provided timings otherwise strict action is taken. If one wishes to spend the night outside or to leave for home one has to give letter to the office for approval.

Campus infrastructure is very great with centralized classrooms, computer lab, library (with separate library for law students), games room, sick room, chapel, gym, sports field, etc. There are both small and large classrooms including amphitheaters available depending on strength of the class. There is quadrangle which was my favorite place where one may spend some free time with their friends and can play games have fun and in canteen which is okay. Most importantly there is Moot Court Room which is an essential part of a law school wherein students may participate during moot court competitions for taking experience of practicality of a law course.

Overall campus life is good only if one keeps himself busy in committees or other activities along with academics. There are several different committees one can join. College crowd is just fine, if you are with right people everything feels right. College keeps organizing several events such as fashion show, fests, blood camp, book fair and it also teaches village students where students get a chance to teach small kids which gets them extra social credits as well. Social credits are very important for Xavier's University.
