“It’s not an IIT, its ISM”, we hear this line every time when we interact with any senior and other people, who are not aware about it. The reason behind the college being called as ISM rather than IIT is lack of some facilities. Other IITs has good facilities but it doesn't have a significant impact. It’s just a way of making joke "Ye IIT Nahi, ISM Hai". Taking admission in lower branches is much better than Civil, Mechanical at 3rd generation IITs or NITs or branches at IIIT. I have done the same, preferring lower branch at IIT Dhanbad over Mechanical in NIT Bhopal and Electronics in IIIT Kota. And, I feel happy about my decision, because IIT your branch doesn't matter, if you are willing to learn and want to develop skills. The bonding between seniors and juniors is very good. Seniors are eager to help their juniors in academics or personal. They will guide you at every step of academics like for mid-semester, end-semester and in also branch change. There are numerous blocks for clubs, technical, cultural, and etc. It helps to develop overall personality and more qualities in students.

In the first year, the courses are same for all the students which consist of one course from each Department of Engineering. After the completion of first year, students have the chance to change their branch based on their first-year grade. It is unbiased and possible for every student who is passionate of learning and getting into his field of interest.

Every faculty member is not so good on the basis of teaching but knowledge wise they are very good. Some teachers are very helping and good at teaching. Sometimes students might feel difficult to understand the accent of the teacher, as teachers come from various backgrounds and different parts of the country.

The college is completely residential having numerous hostels separately for 1st year, 2nd year, and 3rd year, M.Tech, and PhD students. Hostel allotted to 1st years is not very good. Room is allotted in double sharing, and size of rooms is small for two people. Mess food is okay.

The college started in 1926, and the architecture of the campus and building is old but well maintained. In campus we have a big Auditorium named “Penman”, a Lecture Theatre, an Open-Air Theatre, a ground to held DJ Nights. Two Sports ground for every game are maintained very well. Lecture hall and classrooms have a capacity of 135 students. One of the most important buildings is I2H which is Innovation and Incubation Hub. This is the building where all the technical activities occur. Here we have Robotics Club Room, Electronics and IoT Club Room, which are well facilitated with all the required stuff for respective fields.

Life at IIT Dhanbad is cool. Almost all the basic necessities are available inside the campus. Even we have restaurants such as “Barista and Mezbaan” inside the campus to enjoy food at very affordable prices. One drawback of campus is lack of self-served laundries with no washing machines. Here we pay laundries which are not so costly, but students manage by washing clothes on their own. Food stalls and fruit stalls are sufficiently affordable; thus, taste of food is satisfactory. The campus is spread in 395 acres of area, so cycles are preferred for going from here to there. In first year, it can be managed by walking but in further years cycle is required.
