Gauhati Commerce College B.Com Review By Naoboy Singha

It’s a decent college for those wanting to complete their degree from a well known and reputed university. I chose this because of its brand name, strong alumni network and affordability. Its best for student with a middle class background whose goal is to complete a degree alongside pursuing other courses and least suited for those who are expecting good placement opportunities and great social/campus life.

The course I chose (Bachelor of Commerce Honors) was a 3 year course under CBCS which is a great course considering he/she wants a degree/specialisation in commerce field and whose future occupations lie under its spectrum. One must pass his/her higher secondary with good marks to be eligible to apply for this course. General category students have higher cutoff ranging from 85-89% while other SC's and ST's have lower cutoff ranging from 65-70%. The motive for enrolling in this course was to complete my degree under a well known reputed university and to shape path for future endeavors under commerce/non commerce fields.

The faculty members are well qualified, knowledgeable and helpful, especially the young/new faculty members. I personally like the company and teaching methods of young faculty members and I could relate and understand more from them as compared to old professors. Most of the professors were from the local state and a particular regional background of the state. The style of teaching was mainly book/theory based with viva and workshops which were conducted from time to time.

College do have a placement cell but most of the students do not prefer it as they either opt for higher studies or go for Government exams. The college is also least known for its placement opportunities especially after completion of a degree course.

I personally didn’t opt for hostel and stayed in a PG throughout my college life but I do have hostel friends and hearing from them I could say the college has decent facilities with decent rooms but I have also heard few complaints regarding its management and food.

The college has three blocks/buildings. The oldest (main) building is for B.Com. The new/BBA building and the MBA block has a good infrastructure while I do think the main building can be improved as some rooms are very dusty and the AC's do not work in some rooms and also there are minor holes on the ceiling of the old building. Other amenities include a well stocked library, Canteen, Girls/Boys Common room, Hostel and a decent Sports ground.

The campus life is lively for someone with huge friend circle and a good alumni network. The annual college week takes place in any week either in February or March which is the biggest sports and cultural fest of the college. Saraswati Puja is held in the college every year in the month of February. Apart from this other events like the freshers meet with local singers and band really brings out the different culture creating memorable moments which can be cherished for a lifetime. To conclude, the campus life is quite lively for the one who participates and attend different functions.
