Midnapore College B.A Review By Atasi Mandal

After my 12th, I was looking for a good college to get admitted in. My cousin brother recommended the name of Midnapore College as he was an ex-student of the same. This reputed general college is situated at the centre of Midnapore town which falls in the southern part of West Bengal. It was accredited Grade A+ by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Previously under Vidyasagar University, this college has succeeded to establish itself as an autonomous body. Admission procedure here takes place based on results of higher secondary examination both in offline and online platform. The college management was very much active in all aspects. From my perspective, this college offers education, extracurricular activities and self development skills at the same time. Throughout the tenure of the course, the college not only imparted knowledge to achieve academic excellence but also helped in shaping character of the student.

The salient feature of this college is its academic progress. I was a student of B.A. Hons (English). To get admitted in this college, one has to pass higher secondary exam. Since I was fascinated about Indian and Foreign literature, I decided to go with English literature. We attended various seminars every year where reputed professors from different colleges and universities used to come and deliver their valuable speeches. In three years of my graduation course I gained enough knowledge about English and Indian literature. We were provided sufficient computer knowledge which helps us now at present. Consistent academic growth of the college made it one of the best colleges in West Bengal.

Faculties played the most crucial role to help us achieve our targets. Our professors were pioneers for us. Their unique teaching techniques grew in us more interest towards a subject. In my English department, the professors were way too friendly to us. I feel blessed to come across 4 faculty members in my department who were kind enough to share their knowledge with us. There was such a sweet relationship among the teachers and the students that we never hung back to ask any question to clear our doubts. Even the irregular students began to be seen regularly when they were specially taken care of by the professors. Faculty members were well experienced and highly qualified.

Since the college is a general college, training and placement cell do not exist. But, students passing out of this college acquire high knowledge to crack various competitive exams and succeed in getting placed.

When it comes to hostel facility, I feel embarrassed. The good part is separate hostel buildings were provided for girls and boys. Hostel fees were also within affordable range. Though it was large building with several rooms, but the rooms were as small as attics and damp as well. After few days of staying, most of the students ended up in PG due to poor water supply, low grade food and damp condition of the rooms. Separate Hostel super and security personnel were in charge of the hostels.

Midnapore college has a historical background. This college was established in the year 1873 during British rule in India. It is one of the oldest colleges in West Bengal. The huge column structures, copious number of large airy rooms, long corridors throwback to the British architecture. Our library is ideal for studying as it is huge in size with large windows & trees all around with enormous collection of books. There were separate buildings for Science, Arts, Commerce streams, seminar hall, laboratories etc. Other facilities like a big playground, separate common room for girls and boys, print out/ xerox stores were also present. A small canteen was also present which was in need of some changes. Since it is an age old building, it has gone through renovation process which modernized certain areas of the college campus. Medical and emergency support were also available on request.

I become nostalgic when I go back to the days of my college life. I have plenty of cherishable memories with my friends in my college campus. The backyard of the campus is covered with trees. We used to spend time on the paved trees during recess. Varieties of pretty flowers can be seen to deck the campus. For a new comer it is very easy to locate the different buildings for different departments as the campus is well organized. Once a year, college fest is held in the campus. We were looking for Saraswati puja throughout the year as it was celebrated in a grand way.
