IIEST Shibpur placement cell really helps the students

IIEST Shibpur is one of the prestigious colleges along with IITs and NITs of India. It has been granted the status of the Institute of National Importance (INI) in the year of 2014. From 2019 this college has been a part of the NIT Council and has ranked 6th among all the NITs (based on NIRF-2023). IIEST has been established in the year 1856 and is India's second oldest Engineering college after IIT-Roorkee. IIEST is famously known as the B.E. College (Bengal Engineering College) in West Bengal. It has a global alumni network. There is no country in this world where our alumni don't exist. Most of them are leading the best corporate companies in the world. Personally, I have chosen this college over other NITs and IITs because of its humongous brand value and reputation. This institute has a long legacy of 167 years. The research work mainly in the core discipline is awesome and I would recommend joining this institution for students who are particularly interested in the research fields.

The academics at this institution are at par with other NITs and are quiet hectic. Each year consists of two semesters named odd and even semester. In the first year all the students from any discipline follow the same subjects which are Mathematics-1, Physics, Basic Electrical Engineering, Ecology and Environment, Sociology and Professional Ethics, Applied Mechanics, Mathematics-II, Computer Applications, English and Chemistry (along with lab work). The Engineering Drawing lab work is the toughest among these all. Then from the second year onwards the students get to study their core subjects in their respective discipline. There is also an option to change branches after the completion of your first year. The criterion for branch change is to maintain 8+ CGPA and have a good JEE (mains) rank. IIEST provides 9 B.Tech programs including Aerospace Engineering and Applied Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication, Information Technology, Mechanical, Metallurgy and Materials Engineering as well as Mining Engineering. We get enrolled in these courses based on our JEE (Mains) rank. If someone is interested in securing a very good placement just after the completion of B.Tech, he/she should opt for the Circuital as well as Mining Engineering branches. But if someone is totally interested in the research oriented fields then go for the Core Engineering disciplines like Civil Mechanical, Aerospace and Metallurgy Engineering. Fields like Mechanical and Metallurgical Engineering are inter-disciplinary fields. But for these one should have good theoretical knowledge along with a good grasp of Mathematics and Computer applications.

All the professors working here have high credentials when it comes to academics. Almost 99% of the professors have completed their Ph.Ds. Also, some of them have completed their post doctoral degree too. Most of the professors are alumni of this very institute. They take utmost care of their students and guide them in every step possible. The professors help the students during their UG level and even to publish their own research articles. The style of teaching followed here is mostly presentation based but a few of them also use the traditional chalk-board system to teach. The professors are thorough with their knowledge so they expect the students to be very proper as well. Sometimes they appear to be rude but actually they aren't. Overall, they are pretty awesome.

The college has a placement cell named HRM. It really helps the students to get placed in the industry and that too in the roles we expect. Placements of the CST, IT and ETC branch have an average package of more than 19 LPA. The EE branch has an approximate package of 11-12 LPA. The branch of Mechanical, Mining and Metallurgy Engineering has an average package of 8-9 LPA. But branches like Civil and Aerospace have not had satisfactory placement scenarios in the recent years. The overall average package for an entire B.Tech batch is around 10-11.5 LPA.

There are residential facilities in our institute, but the thing to be noted is that it is not for everyone. There is a concept of hostellers and day scholars in IIEST. The day scholars are those whose home is near the institute at the distance within 40km. The day scholars don't get allocated in the hostels. If someone willingly chooses to stay out of the campus then he/she can become a day scholar. There are boy’s hostels here which are named as Hostel-7/8/9/10/11/13 for the UG students and Hostel-14/15/16 for the PG students. Then comes the legendary halls of our institution which is called the Wolfenden hall, Richardson hall, MacDonald hall, Sen hall and the Sengupta hall. All these 5 halls have competitions among themselves. Each hall organises their own sports league. There are 3 girl’s hostels too which are named as Sister Nivedita, Pandya and LT. The hostel life is the best thing for the students studying here. Table tennis and carrom is available. There is also a common room here which as a TV. There are 4 roommates in a single room. In halls we get a single room for usage. But as far as the infrastructure of the halls/hostels is concerned, the institute lacks a bit here. The buildings are very old, so it needs to be under continuous maintenance. Other than the infrastructure, each and everything is good.

College has many old buildings which showcase the British culture and the lush green campus making them even more beautiful. We have mainly two academic blocks namely the Science & Technology Complex and the Main building where the teachings as well as administrative work are done. We have "slaters" where the musical band does their rehearsals.

Overall the campus life at IIEST Shibpur is pretty great. Starting from the beautiful green campus to the chai stops at Gate1, each and everything is mesmerizing. This 114 acre campus binds everyone together. We have the best seniors. The annual and the oldest cultural fest of India called “Rebeca” is conducted here. You will witness the best 4 days of your life during the fests. The clubs are hyper active, the joy flourishes in the air. There is a drama, dance and literary society also available. There are a lot of engaging activities happening here. There is a showcase of brands from numerous luxurious cars like Rolls Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari, etc. IIEST has the biggest technical fest of Kolkata named Instruo. You will witness many flash mobs happening on the roads. The night life of here is great too. Each and every festival of India is celebrated with utmost love and positivity starting from Pohela Boishakh of Bengal to Pongal of Kerala. So if you are getting in this institute, don't hesitate to come. You’ll experience everything here.
