My Opinion on IIEST Shibpur: From Quality Education to External Exposure

Overall Rating
It has been 6 months here in IIEST Shibpur and the experience was really good. The academic, social life and most importantly being able to make friends from all over India is the thing I liked here. This institute is in Kolkata, so one can hang out in many places like Science City during semester breaks. Coming to academics and professors, they are really good here
 

Academics Rating
I am pursuing Mechanical Engineering here. The eligibility criteria for the same is getting very good percentile in JEE Main. The admission process of the institute is done through JoSAA counseling. In a span of 5 months, there will be two examinations: mid semester and end semester. One can easily handle academics here while enjoying campus life side by side and can get good CGPA. One can do branch change in second year by getting 8+ CGPA.
Fee structure depends on category and family income. For general candidates, the tuition fee is Rs. 68,000 per year. If one is residing in hostel, the hostel and mess fee is around Rs. 26,000 per semester So for 1st semester, total cost comes around 1 Lakh. If one has less family income, one can lots of scholarships like GAABESU and many others.
 

Faculty Rating
Faculty members are really very well qualified and educated who have done their degrees from prestigious institute like IITS and IISC. Method of teaching depends on faculty like some prefer blackboard while others PPTs. The student to teacher ratio is good and one can easily approach faculties if having any doubt given the time slot when professors are free. Some of the faculty members have taught in foreign universities as well. Some of the professors are single digit and double digit rankers in the exams like GATE.
 

Placement Rating
As far as I have observed, placements are very good here. In Mechanical, almost everyone was placed as per senior’s information. Students get recruited in top companies like Google Microsoft, PwC, and JP Morgan. Highest package was around 51 LPA.
 

Hostel Rating
Hostel facilities are good. In first year, one can opt for quadruple occupancy rooms with one almirah, bed, table, and chair for each person. Mess food is okayish. We get 3 meals in a day along with evening snacks.
 

Infrastructure Rating
Infrastructure is little old but steps are being taken from past 3 months to renovate it. Campus area is around 114 acres. Classroom has seating capacity around 100. There is one library and 2 canteens. There is one hospital also. One favorite thing in infrastructure is clock tower that looks too pretty. Campus is very green and you can see lots of trees here+ 3 lakes also.
 

Campus Rating
Overall campus life is good. There are lots of clubs like Camera Buff, Reflex Beta, Robo Darshan, Euphony, and many more. One can join any club depending on his or her interest. Annual fest includes Rebecca that happens in April. In February, we have annual athletic sports meet, where anyone can participate. Campus life experience is nice as one can get exposed to various things from academics to co-curriculum.

    My experience in IIEST Shibpur is good. It is situated at the centre of Shibpur and very near to Kolkata. Our institute provides good placements and internship opportunities from 2nd year onwards by Google Amazon, Microsoft, and Infosys companies along with more research opportunities and facilities for PG and core branches.     IIEST is second oldest Engineering Institute in India. Alumni network is very strong and campus life is too good. Connectivity is also very good Howrah, Salimar and Sealdah stations are very near to the institute and airport is also less than 10 KM away.     IIEST shibpur (formerly known as Bengal Engineering College or BESU) comes under the tag of Institute of national importance. To get admission, you need to apply through JEE Mains AIR ranks. This institute provides all B.Tech, M.Tech and P.HD courses. It came at 46 positions in recent NIRF ranking.
