I think I am well suited to answer this question as I have done my bachelors and also doing my masters in Economics from same department and same university. If you don't want to go away from your hometown or out from your comfort zone then do enroll and get admission as we should not forget it is A++ graded so degree holds a lot of value. Also GNDU Amritsar is the main branch of the university.

If you are seeking to study B.Sc or M.Sc Economics from GNDU all you have to make sure is that you have minimum of 50% aggregate in 12th standard for bachelors and at least 60% to get admission in masters. In addition to this you also have to clear the entrance exam which is not very difficult as compared to other universities also the syllabus is given to you by teachers only so no need to worry. Make sure at time of admission you are carrying all your documents and photocopies too. Now talking about the fees, as the department comes under government so it’s very economical. Also the university provides scholarship to students from SC / ST / OBC and also to those who have scored 8 CGPA in all semesters. Frankly I would say if you are looking for career in teaching, or to do Ph.D or planning to give government exams then this institute is best for you.

To be honest the faculty members are well qualified enough but the style of teaching is a bit old school. The faculty members of my department must be boring and not so great but the other faculty members of BBA and Computer Science are strict as well as great in teaching even they bring out the real time experiments. But the teachers do get serious during exam time and are even ready to give extra classes to the students and are also very supportive.

We do have placement cell but not for our department. The placement drive is organised once in a year, where the students from any department can come and register themselves for the job they are interested in. proper interviews takes place. Students are advised to prepare resumes for better impressions in front of recruiters. In the economics department in last 5 years only 5 students have been placed from 2019 batch and after that no one got placed and if they got then only on their own talent and by the guidance of teachers.

Yes, there are residential facilities in the institute and paying guest rooms are available too. The hostels rooms are average you will not get personal room you may get a twin sharing or 3 sharing. As I am a local student so I don’t know much about the hostels but whatever I heard from my friends was all positive. Also there are no private washrooms available. Each floor has its own washrooms that are shared by the students. Mess facility is provided to the students. Also there are strict rules in hostels which each and every student has to follow. by 11pm girls has to come back in hotels or warden will report to your parents or can even impose fines. The hostel rooms are not air conditioned, in case students wants to bring coolers they can, also heavy electrical appliances are not allowed like electric kettle, straighteners or irons.

Infrastructure is pretty old and renovation has already started in some departments. You will get some amazing coffee spots and chilling zones. The campus has one main library in which entry is card based. Also every department do has its own library also. The libraries are air conditioned but the classes are not. Also there's lot of greenery so make sure to wear mosquito repellent and wear full sleeves in summers especially. The architecture is quite extraordinary and historical. The buildings are cool. The best part is that fresh juice shop is also present in the campus. There are many canteens in the campus all over and each and every one is specialized in its own things. The rates are pocket friendly and taste is also good.

The campus life is not like one shown in movies but it’s quite good. Also in month of April we have Jashan where there is inter-department competition in lots of areas like dance, aerobics, football, cricket, etc. Each class has its own class representative, fests are organised once a year and in starting of session small events are organised to interact with each other and get to know about each other. The teachers do interact with students even after class timings and they are very friendly too.
