Indian Institute of Technology B.Tech Review By Yash Baheti

I'm currently a sophomore at IIT BHU, Varanasi pursuing B.Tech in Mining Engineering. During my JOSAA counseling, at my rank, I had to choose between Mechanical of tier 3 IITs or Circuital branches in NITs or Mining Engineering at IIT BHU. As mentioned earlier, I opted for mining because IIT BHU had better reputation, better alumni network, and excellent track record of placements. All major global and Indian companies visit the campus for internship and placement and are usually open for all students irrespective of branch. Also, there are over 50 clubs and councils in our institute ranging from club of programmers to photography club, from robotics to dance and music, from cine club to literary club; you will find it all here. And these are open to all those who are interested. The sports facilities are excellent too, with over 4 playing grounds and one huge sports complex which has a unisex full AC gym too. Every sport, even swimming and taekwondo and yoga, are practiced in campus and have professional staffs. These all factors were more than enough for me to choose a lower branch in this college than mechanical and circuital in lower colleges. Yes our campus is open to all general public, which is a drawback for our college. Due to this, you may sometimes feel safety issues especially if you are a girl. Also you won't get the "proper feel of an IIT" here. But these all are bearable enough if you look at the other side of the coin. At last, I want to say that I have no regrets on joining this institute and I would recommend others to do the same.

For getting admission here, you need to qualify the JEE Advanced exam with at least less than 15k rank in general category. There are 15 branches of engineering in the college from CSE to Ceramic, Pharmaceutical, Mining, etc. The college offers a degree in architecture (B.Arch) too for which you need to quality its separate exam. The academics can be tough or chill according to your chosen branch and the course professors.

Faculty at IIT BHU is world class. Mostly they are graduates from globally acclaimed universities like Harvard, Stanford, MIT, and IITs etc. Usually they are friendly to students unless provoked. Your doubts, let it be basic or advanced, will be solved by them. Carefully listening to the lectures and solving their recommended problems will help you score good CGPA In the college. Talking about attendance, some professors strictly follow the 75% criteria, while some are okay even with 50-60% attendance.

As expected from an IIT, our college has an exceptional track record of placements. The average package of college overall goes around 25 LPA and medium package goes around 20 LPA with more than 90% of students placed. Mostly the remaining ones are those who prepare for higher studies or MBA or civil services etc. From MAANGM (Microsoft, Apple, Amazon, Netflix, Google, and Meta) to TCS, from Software development role to business analyst role or product management or consultant, all kinds of companies visit our campus. And yes there is a training and placement cell which guides the students throughout their placement journey.

Hostels are decent. Recently two new multi floor hostels have been inaugurated for first and second year students with lift facility. Students have triple sharing in their rooms for the first two years of their college, and double sharing afterwards. Students can choose their roommates from second year, in first year, they are allotted alphabetically. In first year, any other branch's people can be your roommate. This is done to increase interaction between different branches. From second year, your roommate will be from your branch itself. There are many common rooms in the hostel which contain indoor games such as table tennis, chess, ludo etc. And yes, you will live the best moments of your college life in that hostel.

Infrastructure in our college is quiet decent and is constantly improving. There are hostels with their respective mess for each year, there is a huge sports complex for all indoor games, there is a fully air conditioned gym in it too. The lecture theatres are located nearly 1 km from the hostels. Recently, the institute has decided that they will be equipped with AC too.

The institute has one the best campus life's one could get in India. There are 3 main fests in the college per year. Kashiyatra - the annual arts and cultural festival, Technex - science and technology fest, and Spardha- the annual sports fest. Colleges from all over India participate in these, with over 50k footfalls in each of them. Celebrities also visit them for talk sessions and concerts. There are over 50 clubs and councils in the college and you can join anyone of them whom you find interesting.
