Delhi Technological University M.Tech Review By Nikhil Tyagi

DTU is the best engineering colleges in Delhi after IIT Delhi. At DTU, everything is practical and not rote learning. Of course, one needs self-motivation because it isn't easy to rely on the faculty. DTU avail all its students for various external opportunities. The workload was always heavy, and the exams were tough. The master's at DTU was as good as doing a master's abroad. CSE of DTU was considered as a soft branch. One can't remain without coding as the college focus entirely on technicalities. The coursework of DTU was such that serious students have gone beyond the boundaries. Our HOD and other non-teaching staff of the college too were educated. From admissions till the final intake, the staff was on their toes. DTU has increased the intake in recent years, which has somewhat deteriorated the quality. It wasn't the case always, but now things have changed. After the first year, Corona came in, and the second year was totally from home.

M. Tech's IT branch was indeed a fun branch. The coursework was diverse as some electrical projects were also included in our curriculum. In a way, the course was 90% is congruent with IT subjects and programming languages. I was in college the first year, but since corona struck just before the second semester exams, the exams were also held online. The third semester was totally online, but one had to pay full attention as they were no shortage of learning even in online. The fourth semester two months were spent on the campus before the next wave came in, but those months were quite hectic academically.

The faculty was brilliant, and some of them were passed out from DCE itself. DCE is the former name of DTU. The name has changed because the faculty who were teaching then are still teaching. Thus, their experience became vital as they knew all the latest in the world of computers and IT. Passing the knowledge offline or online, they were capable of passing that by any means. The student and faculty ratio was less as the class strength was 100 and the total number of faculty for M. Tech was just 10-12. The college needs to increase some of the teaching staff but of course without changing the existing ones. The existing faculty of the college is as good as any college in India.

The Covid-19 has increased the demand for tech engineers significantly. Ed-Tech companies like BYJU's, Unacademy, and others were the front runners as online is the only way of reaching everywhere. The number of students who want to pursue engineering are innumerable, but the colleges are few. Therefore, such ed-tech companies become potent, and that was the main reason for them hiring maximum students from our batch. I don't know every student personally, but all those I know have been placed during February 2019, when college initiated a campus placement. The average package offered to students of DTU pursuing M. Tech was 8 lakhs, and the highest package went all the way till 20 lakhs. Thus, even in Covid times, the college managed to get maximum students placed, and this should be considered as a remarkable achievement.

There were three hostels in all, out of which two were boys hostel and one girls hostel. The boy's hostel was named Jagdish Chandra Bose Hostel, while the girl's hostel was named Sister Nivedita Hostel. DTU has maximum outsiders, and therefore the hostels were huge, and including UG and PG nearly 1500 students used to stay at DTU hostel. Other facilities and all are beyond me as they were at the far end of the campus, and I have never visited any of the hostels.

The college is located in Rohini and has a campus size of 164 acres. The campus was a big old garden with state-of-the-art facilities for academics. The DTU library is more prominent than many college campuses as it was in the middle of the campus with a lawn surrounding it. There are nearly 40 labs, including the computer lab with over 200 machines. The computer center's net speed was 1GBPS, and the entire campus too was Wi-Fi. The college has many gardens and a dedicated sports ground. There's a health club building with some indoor gaming facilities and a gymnasium. The campus was clean as a whistle as one will find no filth inside the campus.

It was sad that I could just be a part of the campus just for a year. Six hours classes and 2 hours lab, and then it was student’s time. The college has a student zone which is more of a smoking zone. The tea stall outside the campus used to be our gathering spot as more than half the class would come there and discuss on any random things. I wish it could last more, but Covid-19 had some other plans.
