Indian Institute of Technology M.Tech Review By Aadya Negi

I had to take a year's drop and lock myself up in my room to get to IIT Roorkee. Well, getting here takes a lot of doing because including all the IITs, there are a little over 10k seats and 5-6 lakhs students appear for the same. Thus, if you are one of those, consider yourself the luckiest, which I do. I had the option of IIT Delhi, but since IIT Roorkee was a dream, I decided to take admissions here. Little did I know then, that even the locals had to stay at the hostels because it is a completely residential program, and we can't move out of the campus after assigned time without prior permissions. I have never stayed strict at IIT Roorkee, even though a residential campus life was not strict with students inside the campus. Of course, there are certain things which one can't do, but still many of them did. If I have to sum up my experience, then ask someone who has dreamt of a thing all their lives and what they feel like when they actually get it. I have no words to explain, and those who have I would like to hear their side of the story.

Academics never go under the radar at IITs. Classes are compulsory because students deprived from writing their exams are quite common at any IIT. Well, I was an obedient student and made sure that my attendance was no short of 80% as it was the minimum percentage required. The course was so superior that from my previous learnings only 10-15% of it saw an extension and rest all was completely new. Well, at IITs there's no shortcut to success, and I used to eat a lot of the heads of my friends and faculties because getting through the course was not at all easy. Academics here are so tough that people who say those who enter IIT come back with a degree and a job are a myth.

Their role became a little redundant as they played a mentor role and therefore, they gave us the topics and discussed the brief of it in the class. Students who have any difficulties understanding it can approach them, but lectures were not as lengthy and harsh as one would imagine. This leaves us to do more self-study, but faculties were always available at our will.

This time around my parents couldn't refuse my placements because even though I was offered a role in TCS in Chennai, the pay cheque was such that they themselves called up each family member and blew their daughter trumpets. Only IIT can help that happen because M. Tech average salary offered annually was over 10 lakhs. Students have received packages worth 50 lakhs and all as M. Tech from IIT Roorkee may take some doing but when you have the opportunity to work with such companies on such a pay scale, the doing looks nothing in front of it.

Should I call them Bhawan's or Hostels because every hostel building here was a Bhawan. There were three girl's hostels in all at the campus and the disparity is not far from the IIT campus too, because against 10 boy's hostels, there were 3 girl's hostels. Co-ed hostel, which I never thought that something like this is also a possibility, I saw at IIT Roorkee. I stayed at the Indira Bhawan as I had the option of choosing single rooms in Kasturba Bhawan, but the campus is so big that I would have to take a long walk to reach my academic block. I chose Indira as it was quite close to my academic block. The hostel food and all was great and more than the food and the rooms, it was the quality hostel life that we led at IIT Roorkee that made it a moment to treasure for the rest of my life.

The campus is dotted with a Mosque, Church, and a Temple. I have never seen or heard that any campus has that. Close to the main gate is the Church, and right next to the Khosla House is the Mosque, and Saraswati Temple is close to the football ground of the campus. Other than that, there are all the common facilities, so I will write about the rare ones. IIT Roorkee campus has two banks at its campus. SBI and PNB both have their branch as well as 24 hours ATM facility at the campus. Students of IIT Roorkee don't have to go to the railway station for reservation as a reservation counter is there at the IIT Roorkee campus. Lastly, the Institute hospital, which has around 80 beds, has been one of the biggest hospitals in any Institutes that don't have medical studies.

There you are, ladies and gentlemen, the best part of IIT Roorkee. If one thinks that IITs are all about studies then they are wrongly updated because IITs fests are not famous in India but abroad too. My campus life was based on my performance, which I guess was good enough, as out of all the students who were placed, I was also the one of them. Out of all the students who turned up for events, I was one of them. Hence, I enjoyed my campus life to the core as I knew these glory days will be a thing of the past soon.
