BIT Mesra Campus Life: Clubs, Sports, and More

My experience of BIT Mesra has been mixed. The positive aspects of this Institute are its placements, its highly qualified professors and its reputation. On the negative side the Institute has been investing very little lately and sometimes. The facilities provided are very frustrating. I choose this Institute over mid NIT’s mainly because of its placements. Now I do not know about those nits, but apart from academics the Institute has been really disappointing. For example it has 2 proper football grounds of top quality but the facilities provided to conduct matches is really poor. The gym is really small and there’s only one proper gym for all boys. If you are a girl, you have to get back in the hostel by 9pm. the hostels given to girls are terrible (as much as I have heard from my female friends).

I am doing B.Tech in electronics and communication. I wanted to get CSE but my rank was 30k so I could only get CSE in IIITs and lower NITs in general category. I got admission here through csab counseling. Talking about the admission process, you have to secure a seat here in JOSAA or CSAB counseling. If you didn’t get any seat there, you can apply for special rounds on their official website. Then you have to show up for document verification which is a very long process here. Talking about the exams, there are mainly 4 exams in one semester. First you will have your first quiz in about a month after the semester starts and it will contain 10 marks. Then you’ll have the midsems which will be of 25 marks. Then you’ll have quiz 2 which will be of 10 marks. Finally you’ll have endsems exams which will be of 50 marks. In the first year all the students irrespective of their branch have to study the same subjects and thereafter they will study subjects related to their branch only.

The overall fees per year here is around Rs. 4 to 5 lakh. Tuition fees per semester are: Rs. 1,44,000. Hostel fees per semester are Rs. 20,000. Mess fees (estimated) is Rs. 55,000 in addition to these fees you have to pay its development fees at the time of admission which is about Rs. 60,000. This money will be used to provide laptops to the students at the end of the first semester.

Overall the faculty of BIT Mesra is pretty good. Now if we talk about the faculty of Electronics and Communication, the faculty is somewhat average. The professors are highly qualified but the problem is with their teaching style. Most of the professors here have studied in top Institutes like IIT’s etc. The classes are huge. In my section there are 60 students and our lectures are done with electrical students. This year BCS of the same syllabus is in the first year.

The best part about BIT Mesra is its placements. The average package this year is Rs. 12 lakh per annum and the highest is Rs. 52 LPA. Branch wise breakdown of average package of 2024: Computer Science: 20 LPA. Electronics and Communication: 17 LPA, Electrical and Electronics: 11 LPA. For Mathematics and Computing: 11 LPA, Mechanical: 11 LPA, etc. Other Branches like Civil, Chemical and Industrial Engineering have average package in the range of 7 to 10 LPA. Civil has the lowest average package. The percentage of students placed is about 70 to 80 percent but remember this is from the students eligible for placements. The criteria to sit in placement are having less than 4 backlogs.

Hostels are the worst part about this Institute. The rooms are really small and you have to share your room with another person. The quality of food is average both in terms of nutrition and taste. You have to pay the hostel fees along with the tuition fees. There are no clear rules for boys. We can hangout as late as we want but girls must get to hostel by 9pm. The good part about hostels here are that as a boy you don’t face much restrictions. The warden doesn’t live in the hostel and barely pays any visits.

The infrastructure of the academic building is pretty good as compared to the hostels. The classrooms are really nice and the labs have all the facilities needed. One problem is that of the library is small. It is located inside the main academic building. During the time of examination it’s really hard to find a free seat there. The computers in the library are really old and most of them do not work. The campus has an area of 800 acres but almost half of it is just jungle. The sports facilities here are somewhat okay. The grounds are there for every sport but they usually do not give you the equipment, you will have to manage that by yourself. There aren’t a lot of places to hang out here. There is this place called the inner canteen and then there is outer canteen. Another big place here is the Laxmi canteen, but it is only made for specific type of people. You will know what it means when you come here.

The overall campus life is fine. There are almost 50 clubs here and they organize events every now and then. If you are a sports fan you will get to play in cricket, football and chess tournament each year and then there is this sports fest which happens in January which includes sports like running, javelin throw, cycling, etc. If you are good at making friends then don’t worry you will have a great time in the hostels no matter which Institute it is. The biggest fest here is the BITotsav which happens in March and then there is the tech fest called Pantheon which includes events like Coding, robotics, etc. The clubs organize other activities as well like gaming tournaments, IPL auction, etc.
